Warhammer / WH40K Gaming!
Not the TT but feel free to discuss that if you like. I thought it would be worth having a specific thread for anything and everything Games Workshop-derived, which as of last year, is really quite a lot, and I'm under the impression that the games are getting quite good (not fully amazing, but definitely better than previous assware). Obviously the biggest "universe" to draw game material on, obviously Daz just wants XCom2 in the 40k universe and he's right, but in the meantime:

Past:

Dark Omen - very old but well acclaimed IIRC

Dawn Of War - http://store.steampowered.com/app/4570/
It did a pretty damn good job of being a functional RTS and being full of WH40k style.

Dawn Of War 2 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/15620/
A much tighter focus on RTT with some RPG-lite elements. Some people didn't like this focus, I did, and thought it was cool for a sequel to try something a bit different.

Fire Warrior - meant to be arse.

Warhammer Online - shut down.

Warhammer Mark Of Chaos - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer:_Mark_of_Chaos
I can't remember anything about this??

Space Marine - http://store.steampowered.com/app/55150/
Simple, arcadey, not mind-blowing, but good WH40k fun.

Space Hulk Ascension - http://store.steampowered.com/app/317620/
Did exactly what it was supposed to. Simple, repetitive, but well done and addictive.

Recent / Present:

Vermintide - http://store.steampowered.com/app/235540/
An unforgiving Skaven-smashing L4D2. Didn't have the staying power of the L4D games, but pretty cool.

Total Warhammer - http://store.steampowered.com/app/364360/
I've seen good things watching Cohh play it. A lot of negative reviews recently solely about aggressive DLC marketting, what-fucking-ever. Still got to play it.

Battlefleet Gothic - http://store.steampowered.com/app/363680/
Essentially a 2D RTT Battlefleet game with plenty of WH40K style. Quite repetitive with randomly generated missions, but also good fun and rather moreish.

WH40K: Eternal Crusade - http://store.steampowered.com/app/375230/
Online MP 3PS. Did anyone play this??

Mordheim - http://store.steampowered.com/app/276810/
Just started this. Stylish, interesting gameplay, overwhelming amount of stats that you don't know if you need to heed or not. Meant to be frustrating and RNG-ridden, but also good if you persist with it.

Space Hulk Deathwing - http://store.steampowered.com/app/298900/
Buggy beta put me off getting this early, but from most accounts, apart from the bugs the style of it is great and the gameplay decent. Hopefully will get polished after release.

Blood Bowl 2 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/236690/
Not really heeded this. Seems to look great?

WH40k:Sanctus Reach - http://store.steampowered.com/app/502370/
A very very lite tile-based version of the TT game, with only Space Wolves vs Orks at the moment. Looks like it would be spot on as a 5 budget title.

Future:

Dawn Of War 3 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/285190/
Reverting back to the larger scale skirmishes of DOW1, but with Imperial Knights. Woot!

Inquisitor Martyr - https://www.bluesnews.com/s/172548/warhammer-40000-inquisitor-martyr-videos
Pure Diablo3-style 40K ARPG. Looks well presented but purely functional rather than inspirational.

Manowar Corsair - http://store.steampowered.com/app/344240/
Something a bit different, Warhammer pirating / trading / naval combat. Currently looks very previous-gen, but also meant to be a whole lot of fun. One to keep an eye on.

Necromunda - https://www.bluesnews.com/s/177741/necromunda-underhive-wars-announced
No details but it's the Mordheim blokes, so they know what they're doing IF they listen to the clear criticisms of Mordheim.

N.B. I haven't listed mobile / tablet games because they're the stuff that's given GW games a bad reputation for shallow, pointless, cash-grabbing shovelware in previous years. FWIW I do quite like Warhammer Quest as an Android game - it's very basic, but fun and well-presented.

Not Even Played It More Than 10 Minutes
even though I got it at launch...

Space Hulk Ascension for $1 in the new Humble Bundle.
Well Worth It.

Right You Dicks.
On a whim I got Space Hulk Deathwing.

Played the first 3 missions in single player on normal skill, and guess what....it's good.

Okay so there are issues:

The UI and menus are quite fugly.
The command wheel is a bit janky.
The dialogue is as pompous as ever.
The graphic style is a bit repetitively grey and grim.
The central crosshair twitch is still there.
It's pretty maze-like.

BUT:

It's more fun in single player as you get to explore the environments a lot more.
The graphics are good, if dark.
The level of GRIMDARK40KPORN is exceptional.
The grey corridors are broken up well enough:

Combat is decent. It's shooting 'stealers what do you expect.
The weapon effects are proper epilepsy-inducing. I can see this would piss some people off but I kinda like it. Assault Cannon is constant strobing, Flamer fire obscures everything. It kinda works with the "I am a fucking powerful terminator but even I can't see wtf is going on when there is bullets and stealer limbs flying everywhere".
There's mini-progression, relic collecting and micro-upgrading, which is nice enough.

In short, I'm enjoying it, and if you want to experience the Space Hulk vibe from a FPS perspective....this works.
Yay! I Knew Streum On Studios Had It In Them.
Look forward to trying it out time permitting
Killes.
Will be cool if someone else enjoys it, despite the mixed reviews on Steam. Played 2 more missions since then and still like it. Equipping both you and your heavy with assault cannons for the horde moments is constant 600bpm insanity. I know you're rather particular about your tastes in games (re: a fussy bitch :P), and OFC you're a terminator so you move like a terminator, slow and clunky although mouse look is slick, and weapons have spin-ups / recharges etc- it ain't Doom - but I do think this can be a lot of fun for the peaks and troughs of desolate exploration and swarming violence. I'm finding it fair on Normal and with two more skills above that it could be a pretty good challenge.

I get Space Hulk, I get you are a walking tank and that's cool if that's the point :P
Mordheim City Of The FUCKINGCUNTINGSHITGAMEFUCK
Got back into this. Played one mission last night, went very smoothly. Started a story mission tonight, Act 2-1. Fucking chaos library full of random teleporters with no fucking indication they are teleporters. Got my warband spread all over the fucking map including my leader and rat ogre in somewhere that seemed to have no exit and no return. Started dying, decided to Abandon Mission (all homiez have to roll on the out of action table). Much injuries, my level 9 leader died, and now my new leader, poison bro, and my rat ogre are all subject to fucking stupidity so don't do anything half the game and totally fuck with my "skaven mobility" plan.

FUCK THIS FUCKING GAME.

Still playing 2 more normal missions tonight tho.
Dawn Of War 3 Is Out.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/285190/Warhammer_40000_Dawn_of_War_III/

40, mixed reviews, although I'm wary of those becuase of the whining over DOW2 taking a different gameplay direction to DOW1 despite it being a very good game. But got enough stuff to play for now so will see how it settles. It will go on my "imminent RTSes to buy" list which is, errr, rather short.

Did another mission of SH:DW, the vibes really are strong in this one. It's not just 40KPORN it's dark industrial future derelict space ship porn in general.
Finished Space Hulk Deathwing.
It was good. A bit too short. Steam says I played 20 hours, some of that will be alt-tabbed so maybe 15 or so hours actual playing. I expected it to be longer, it felt like maybe 2/3 of a full game size, partly because the last 2 missions (out of 7) are re-used maps so they're not as interesting to explore (although the gameplay ramps up decently).

On that basis, I'd wait for a sale price especially if you're a normal gamer (for whom the game still has merit in it's own right as a characterful gothic industrial alien shooter). For a diehard 40k / Space Hulk fan, it might be worth getting sooner.

I'll be jumping on any DLC for sure.
BFG For 12
http://store.steampowered.com/app/363680/Battlefleet_Gothic_Armada/

Very well worth it if you like a real time "squad size" tactics game with the Battlefleet Gothic flavour. A bit repetitive but nicely presented and quite moreish.
Also Gotta Say The Latest Reviews For It On Steam Are...
...bullshit.
State Of Affairs.
Manowar Corsair just isn't looking that great any more: http://store.steampowered.com/app/344240/Man_O_War_Corsair__Warhammer_Naval_Battles/

It was looking good as an early access / alpha thing as long as they were going to improve the pre-2000 GFX and super-clunky controls, but apparently little change. So that's off the radar.

OTOH, Total Warhammer 2 seems to be doing it's thing:

Spermintide 2 Announced:
https://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&boardid=1&threadid=183493

If they L4D2 the shit out of this, I'm in. Vermintide was not amazing but good enough to have me up for playing more of it, and if they improve it all round then I'm game.

Warhammer RPG Books
Warhammer RPG Books - Bundle

Never played it, but looks like a quality stuff.
Sadly it requires you to meet and interaction with humans in person, so you guys will have to leave your troll caves.

ps.
Hint: Maybe playing via Skype/Discord will work.
Such Fun

[21:43] Shambler: fuckity fuck fuck mcfuck
[21:43] Shambler: my 2nd leader died in fucking mordheim
[21:44] Shambler: so i now have a level 8-9 warband with all warriors at that level and a level 0 leader who will keel over a die if a fucking empire bunny rabbit just farts at him
[21:44] Shambler: FFFFFFS

You guys really need to give Mordheim a go. It's a great cure if you aren't stressed or tense enough....
Nearly Finished Mordheim.
Just waiting for the last mission to spawn on Normal/Hard skill not fucking Deadly/Brutal. In the meantime levelling up my warriors and hoarding wyrdstone like fuckery. It is still frustrating and still addictive/really worth trying. My review from Steam:

Hard but addictive and inspiring. A classic turn-based-tactics mix of keyboard chewing rage and fist-pumping exhilaration. More on that later.

This game is unforgiving, RNG-driven, and distinctly un-casual. You gotta focus and get as much right as you can and grit your teeth when it goes wrong. Here's a few tips to start:

Gang up on enemies all the time --- Avoid the more scattered deployments --- Always Launch AND DEPLOY to keep your warband close together --- Only collect Warpstone / Loot if it's en route to joining up to gang up on enemies --- Ditto with secondary objectives --- Loot all enemies if you have inventory space, once you've learnt what loot is valuable --- Don't buy skills until later in the game --- Don't forget to switch your weapons around if you're having to put reserves in --- Don't worry if you have a small warband due to injury, it will be more manageable small vs. small --- Take heed of the initiative order and consider using delay or disengage to maximise your combat situations (but beware of missing dodge / parry stances) --- Be wary of ambush stances pulling your units out of group position --- Enemy impressives get stuck a lot, cheese them --- NEVER Abandon Mission --- Scout carefully to avoid ambushes. Etc.

So yeah it's tough. But THERE are tactics to use to deal with it, and take into account the RNG, mostly stacking the odds in your favour with what you can control. And then it works and it's got the classic XCom EU thing of shouting at the screen "YES F**KING COME ON DUDE YOU NAILED HIM"....not many games have that much engagement and satisfaction when your little dudes get it right.

(I'm playing Skaven, which might make me more emotionally attached).

Seriously. It really is worth the effort. I left it alone for months after I royally screwed my warband by Abandoning a main mission (do not do this). Came back and got hooked again. I have to really focus each mission but it's rewarding.

What else? The movement system is really novel amongst turn-based strat and can be used pretty well, as well as adding immersion. The warbands have plenty of character (my Skaven certainly do, I wish they had Orcs and Gobbos tho). The graphics are distinctly previous-gen BUT are well themed and stylish. The city is proper warped even if it is quite repetitive revisiting the same areas. In short it's presented well for turn-based tactics.

Give it a go :)

Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPbXOHZW8co

Hyped. First one was a good solid "squad-size" streamlined real time tactics game, a bit repetitive but fun, characterful, and moreish, definitely happy to play another.
