Episode Jam
Hey guys, it's time for another mapjam.

This time we're looking for 6 to 8 mappers, so get in early ^_^

Our target release date will be the 26th of March. But this will be flexible as I want the maps to have a polished quality.

The theme is a vanilla-like episode for quake. In the discussion thread I mentioned a possible map flow of the following:

M1 Base map (as per id convention) ->
M2 polluting into a swamp map ->
M3 entering into a ruins map ->
M4 which enters a lost "lovecraftian" city ->
M5 which has a maze like cultist church ->
M6 that has a boss battle.
Secret map -> whatever really.

If you'd like to change one of the map themes for whatever reason, that is fine, but it must make sense for the "narrative".

Pick a map you'd like to contribute. I'd like to encourage mappers to make their own textures to use alongside the original id textures. I say this because I'd like to have new textures to contribute to the community at the end of the jam.

If you feel like you'd like to use other 3rd party textures then I'm open to this, but please make sure they fit the theme and work alongside the id textures.

Maps will exit to the next map in sequence rather than a hub, so we're looking for scaling difficulty over the course of the episode. Please keep this in mind when choosing your weapon loadout.

Ideally I hope this will be a highly collaborative process. Conceptually, the flow and the feel of the maps should mesh well together. As such I'll be encouraging iterative build processes. Feedback from other mappers should also be shared during this process.

Due to feedback in the other thread, I've removed the restriction on coloured lights, skyboxes and fog.

Look forward to mapping with you all!

Preach
Ionous was doing the boss level, if you want to collaborate with him on that, then I'm more than happy with that so long as he is.
FifthElephant
Daz jumped into the discord and asked to do the start map, but if you want to do another secret map then you're more than welcome to join and contribute too.
Sure, Put Me In

The Aesthetics
This was suppose to be retro/painted with a rougher brush yea? Id1 architecture but +1, we can do better without it taking longer today :) and with texture alignment. I got the impression this is not a "every brick is a brush" kinda thing, focus is on solid gameplay
Boss
can i suggest the lava worm here? https://www.quaddicted.com/reviews/virtus.html But it would become completely a mod.

If not and it's simpler to do, A chton with DoE's Lavamen. Bosses on their own are easy to exploit.
Daz Making The Start Map
Five bucks that the changelevel triggers will lack the no intermission flag...

Actually, I expect a clever and intricate combination of skill selection and secret level in one!
Boss
As Lovecraft invented a ton of alien deitys/monsters it could be one of the other ones.

Remember to not make it a bulletsponge, like in any other 'modern' FPS.
Use the Zelda formula: Do some shit 3 times to kill the boss: e.g.: press 3 buttons to grille some dude in his jacuzzi because of some conveniently placed electrodes.
I wouldn't enjoy an original boss remade.
I don't have a clue how long it takes to make enemys for quake from scratch.
Would You Guys Consider Including A DM Map?
If so I like to do something and I've released some in the past. Although I should probably read this thread instead of scanning it. LMK.
@Giftmarcher
I linked the discord chat that we're using for communication earlier in this thread. Please join us. Everybody else who is participating is there.

@FifthElephant you too.
Hey Guys
how's your progress with this? Show some screenshots.
<Bal> SOON </bal>
It's going
Release Date

WIP shots of course.
Yo Snaut!
If release date is still at least a few weeks away, I could do some original music for you guys.
Hey Mugwump
come join us on discord and have a discussion about the feel that our maps are going for: https://discord.gg/hryyaB

I so much hope this episode becomes real thing!

The guys took some time off for the other jam, but now that it's finished they should be back feeling a little more refreshed.
Or Even More Worn Out...

God I hope not.

Scope creep has meant we've exceeded the initial target date by a long long way. It's creeping ever closer to completion, but I really would like it done soon. The guys are working though ^_^
Teeeeeease
@DaZ
It's great! Sometimes less is more, quiet is loud...

I am (still) working on a trailer for Jam9 and wanted to warn you the beginning of mine is a bit similar to this video. Didn't want anyone out there going "ripoff!!" But great minds right? :)

Quake-Hype FTW!
This Theme

The theme is a vanilla-like episode for quake. In the discussion thread I mentioned a possible map flow of the following:

M1 Base map (as per id convention) ->
M2 polluting into a swamp map ->
M3 entering into a ruins map ->
M4 which enters a lost "lovecraftian" city ->
M5 which has a maze like cultist church ->
M6 that has a boss battle.
Secret map -> whatever really.

Market research shows the target audience has a near 100% approval rating for the suggested theme and concept, with the slight proviso that "metal" maps are included as suitable, along with a possible extension to M7.
Yeah So
We've departed from the vanilla feel a little bit, but I'm confident you'll still like it.

The episode flow is almost identical to what you quoted still.

Regardless of theme, as long as it's finished one day and good, I'll be happy.
