I think the first few maps are the best, no doubt due to the excellent beta-testing many years ago.

terra5 i found annoyingly hard this time, but i think you were supposed to carry the weapons over? i kept loading each without weapons.
i liked the last one very much (6) because it was q1runic, although that trap was annoying and i only figured it out because when i died the first time, i could see through the func_door and discovered the trick. not really the coolest thing imo... :\
also, terra5 was a really nice looking (oldskool e1m2-e1m4 theme)map, but i couldn't figure out the trick to open the door at the end to finish the map (ended up noclipping through). i liked how you could see the way to the exit but the rock collapses at the start. :)

These were awesome.
Every time something got a little too hard at first I recalled the line in the readme about them being "completely untested" (which is apparently not true?) and was more than ready to be disappointed but it never actually happened.
The best example is terra3 with the ambush right before the end - a half dozen shamblers all dropped in and I said, "Oh, come on now, what the f- ah, haha :D"
czg, what are you doing with your time, if you are not mapping for Quake 1? If i had to guess, i'd say you were into 3dsmax... like myself, or Maya... like Tim Elek.

Awesome maps! Terra6 crashes on me if I finish Terra5 and load the next map. Loading the map from the console works fine though.

Works fine in Fitzquake and GLQuake.
I liked the maps but i think you could easily reach a bigger audience, too.
The quakeworld community is dying for new good dm maps, and all your help would be needed.
Even now when I'm looking at terra6, it's got some excellent places that would rule in a fast-pace qwdm 4 on 4 match. It's also about the right size. Alas, it lacks dm entities and some more connectivity might not hurt. (A bit too much dead ends and long corridors?) But first try could be with just some dm entities! Putting spawns, weapons and ammo there. Remember, a lot of people like many of the original id episode maps, that weren't really designed with dm in mind but happen to work in dm anyway!
Dm mapping can't be super-hard, and you can always refine the maps or in the end do just some entity fine-tuning. (with dm I usually mean 4on4 matches like at www.nqr.nu)
There was a a custom map tournament, and from the maps made for it, cmt3 and cmt4 are most popular now, so you can run around a bit and check on "how its done". :)
Of course, dm2, dm3 and e1m2 are "the big three", unsurpassable classics, and it's worth looking them a lot too.
Really, making dm maps could be rewarding! If there's a better place for this discussion, inform me :)
I don't know why you're so negative about these maps in your text file. They're all wonderful maps - It feels like it could be episode 5 of the original game :) Thanks a bunch!

Well, I took a look to the screenies, and I decided to play the serie, and... I really enjoy it. The mixing you did with std id-software/doom textures is really good. Achitectures (the more in castles part) are really interesting, and as well there is nothing to say about lightning effects which are very god as well.
Like Zwiffle, I really think it's one of the best maps I've played... Great work...
It might be worth posting that in the GA thread if you want more people to see it.
However, there are a huge amount of good custom DM maps out there, you just need to look for them. I was following the Q1 DM mapping scene for a few years and saw lots of quality maps. Just go to any good Q1 mappers site and start following the links to other sites...
there's arseloads of uber quality maps noone plays, go search for them!
start with planetquake.com/ramshackle
then maps.quakeworld.nu, then go further and further and you'll find what you're looking for...

I didn't have the opportunity to play the maps yet, but I don't doubt that they are great!
I don't see anyone else here have mentioned it, but, I heard from people in #TF today that the exit of terra4 is b0rked on normal skill. (It's b0rked on easy skill too, but you can still exit the level there.)
At the exit, it's supposed to spawn three monsters on hard, two monsters on normal and one on easy.
As it is now, it spawns three on hard, one on normal and two on easy. This makes the trigger_counter on normal skill unable to open the exit because there's only one monster where it requires two, and on easy skill it opens after you've only killed one monster.
Well well. Shit happens. Sorry if anyone got stuck there on normal, nothing I can do about that now, just noclip down to the exit please. As I've said not a whole lot of testing has gone into these maps, and the testing that has been has mostly been on easy and hard skill, because one assumes that if easy is ok, and hard is ok, anything inbetween is ok too!
Anyway, I suck immensely and I grant you permission to photoshop genitalia onto my face if that should make you feel any better.

I finally got a chance to play these and apart from the actual looks, I really liked the layouts and combat scenarios you created. Playing these really gave me back some of that old feeling I remember from the early days of custom maps. It's actually left me feeling a bit inspired...

If you're counting, there's a similar kind of bug in terra1 on skill 0 -- after the gk door you have to kill two enforcers to open the next door, but there's only one enforcer to kill. It's not a huge deal, as you can still complete the level with some trick jumping or just plain wading through slime...

Those maps are really inspiring. My favourite is terra4 with ogres throwing grenades thru small windows. That's the first map ever I was being hit directly in the face with a grenade thrown thru a flame - that was shocking!
You know, after reading the readme file I wasn't quite expecting something of this quality.
Awesome stuff. I particularly loved the broken walls/stone details - something which has become somewhat of a czg trademark.
I felt the architecture improved in the later maps - terra4 was a true Piranesian work of art.
Monster ambushes were very well done and hilarious - very Doom-like. I laughed when monsters popped up out of the ground.

People keep calling these maps "oldskool". What does oldskool mean? After finally getting the time to play them I can only assume that it means "really well designed and constructed and excellent fun to play".

As in the style of Quake itself, smaller, Quake themed maps with some exploration, nice styles but not too extravagent, and a strong Quakey atmosphere.
But of course in this case done with better build quality, stronger design, and beefier gameplay. But still retaining that original Quake flava - which is a great thing IMHO.

Thanks. I knew that already, of course, but thanks anyway. My question was suppossed to be a sideways sarcastic prod at people that think size and "new things" maketh the map. Didn't really work, though. Besides which I can't think of any of the mappers that are still mapping for the mighty Q that are (that) guilty. Most of them have blessedly "retired".

Great work master. You know - before playing this pack I had spent some minutes with some frustrating Doom 3 level followed by a frustrating ZDoom level - I was so pissed off. But then I saw terra.zip on my desktop and decided to have some Quake fun - and fun it was.
I love the clean look of these levels and the near-perfect gameplay. The only unfortunate stop was at the end of the fourth map where the exit wouldn't open due to a bug mentioned here. I really loved the way those four Shamblers were thrown at you at the end of the third level - I was like "is this guy serious?" - and then they were gone.

No, it's becuase the text is in 8-bit, and your browser is using the wrong 8-bit character set to display cyrillic. In IE, you can set your "encoding" to show cyrillic by right-clicking on the page and choosing KOI8-R. But this will replace accented vowels with cyrillic universally. The ideal solution is to ask the spammer to post in unicode (two bytes per character.)

And, despite still hating czg with the wrath of a thousand jihads, I have to stress how great this release is.
Small maps with moderate monster count and fun gameplay - oldschool Quake vibe - and varying themes. Most of them apparently even playable from shotgun start. Cool layouts, too.
I'd definitely like to see more of this type of maps instead of the large, 200 monster grindfests or complex concept pieces that have dominated the releases of recent years.

negke sent me a fixed version too (also another fix no terra1), I am gonna use that one if I ever update.
So I did a pretty half-assed attempt at speedrunning these maps on easy skill with JoeQuake, didn't see any other runs so I figured it'd be a waste to just have the demo files lying on my hd to rot, so why not share them... perhaps someone will even enjoy them.
All maps are played from scratch, no items or weapons from previous levels
