Stealing Map Layouts
I haven't started a new thread for a while (if ever) so I though I'd post this.

Have you ever been so lazy/crap that you couldn't be arsed to think up your own layout for a map?
But you knew that if you tried to steal a layout from an existing map somone would recognize it, and people would realise that you're a loser. So what do you do? That's easy...

...You steal the layout of a building or real life structure you know well.

I'm currently using the layout of a night club in Sheffield to make a DM map. Anyone else used real life buildings as map layouts? What kind of buildings work well? Did you learn anything about the buidling by trying to build it in a game? Did anything funny happen while you where building the map or thinking about something vaguely related to this? How funny was it?

Discuss.
No!
No!
No!

Fthaggn....
Hehe
so we might see DRANZ_BAR ?
Stolen Map Layout
Anyone else used real life buildings as map layouts?

Unfortunately, yes.

What kind of buildings work well?

None.

Did you learn anything about the buidling by trying to build it in a game?

No.

Did anything funny happen while you where building the map or thinking about something vaguely related to this?

No.
Diary Of A Mapper
In the beginning of Quake I once got so curious
why my own maps always got much bigger on data-account than those of ID.
So I decided to take the challenge of remaking
"the palce of the two deaths" e1m2
Don't ask how I made it, but I did.
That's maybe a kind of "robin hood", but it
explained me much about the hows and ifs of
Quake mapping.
Later made a splendid level, by tossing the
pieces into another layout.
But I can't call that stealing, as anyone see
immedeatly it's Quake own "furnish".

But stealing maps from others seems a lack of
fantisy to me, as sur as the shambler's catch-if-catch-can.
Dude!
...that was the most random post ever. MORE!
I've Stolen Many Layouts
only one from real life though when I didn't know better and did awefull maps in thred.

you start the topic, you make it random...
Um, What?
MadFox... I think Drannerz was saying that you sounded like a rabid monkey on crack.

and that you killed Jesus.

Yeah This Is A Pretty Popular Practice
hence the endless stream of "this is a map of my school/house" releases you get at the start of any game.

compare the layout of your favourite dm maps with some common normal architecture layouts. nuff said.
Chorstorphine Hill Bunker
Nuff indeed. I kinda wrote about this on my page for my HL map Ashpit - it's the closest I ever got to 'basing my map on a real place'. The fallout shelter that was its inspiration is not like any other kind of building most of us spend our time in ( house, office, school, mall, hospital - all of which have been the basis for maps at some time or other ). The shelter was mostly subterranean, concrete and military in design - all ideal qualities for a FPS map.
However, I never tried mapping it accurately in Quake. I did try in HL, specifically for CS, and it failed utterly. The max viewdistance was an immediate hinderance because for a CS scenario to work, the players needed to be able to move around on top of the hill as well as under it. The layout, though absolutely real and totally appropriate to the HL theme, wouldn't neccessarily have made for good gameplay.
It was worth trying, though, just to learn.
Dranz...
Try the cathedral for inspiration , the new , modern bit. Kinda cool, shows how rightangled stuff can work pretty well.
Lol
scampie, i think he might be offended at the religious remark!

top mappers prolly can take good inspiration from something real but most things will be a bit boring like telling a joke you heard from a comedian. it might not work in another situation.

picking bits and assembling them like a jigsaw is prolly more successful
Nuts
"Strange Jesus" answered the rabid, "you just blew a good opinion to cracks..."
I Think I
stole the layout for a box map.

the enter key is your friend, but not your horse-dealer.
Wrath
I would never make my enter key my horse-dealer.
Title Cannot Be Empty
Taking ideas from real buldings doesn't really work, except for those 'realistic' games. And even they tend to look bit bland. Thats my two base currency units anyways.
Blah
The map I built using a real life layout will be released in about three weeks. Just in case anyone wanted to know.
Drannerz
Maybe you'll be the exception. For just about any 'rule' you could make up about mapping someone will know a good map that breaks it.
Or...
the difference might lie in what the function of the building was for. The Borchardt library at La Trobe uni would make a crap level, but when Kell makes a 'library' it rocks. Consider the nightclub as real life inspiration: nooks, several levels (either joined directly or via a "cornered & staired" corridoor), variety of large atrium like spaces and smaller chill out areas (usually with more than one access/exit point, dead ends (toilets), a consistent theme and scheme with just enough variation in design to keep the patrons interested in their down moments.

Add some guns and it sounds like a DM level to me =)
Distrans :
i challenge you to a duel on rich_bar!!!
Distrans:
..yeah! you got the idea completely!
Confession To Make
the layout of my geocomp2 entry was completely copied from fbdm5 brutal force, but mirrored so ppl wouldnt recognise it (well noone did recognise it it think, mainly because only 5 ppl downloaded the map i think)... i tried to contact the author about it but got no reaction. well it was mainly because of the deadline that i needed a good layout fast that would work without playtesting. oh and i ripped the slopy concept from aardappel but he was okay with that :) what can i say... better to copy a good concept than thinking of a crappy one yourself

didnt know qmap still existed btw

Ahw Shit
yeah yeah i am a forum retard
i will now leave and shit my pants

bye
Zippie
well you picked a decent map to rip off, it was one of my favs for q2.
Zippie
I downloaded your geocomp2 map!
Hehe...
The result would be a foregone conclusion regardless of the level:

"distrans was gibbed by metlslime"

...repeat ad nauseum...

I thought pirates used "enter" to capture ships, but let me be the horse, who's searching the next bar in a stolen sense.
Madfox
nah, you've gone too far now. it's obvious you're doing it deliberately.

there'll only ever be one QMD.
Never Argue With A German
As I am only a foreigner, having quiet a ball to understand what is ment, makes it difficult for me to even get into your way of thinking.
Reading these boards gives me a strange habbitude, which draws me from logical information to shall I say boredom.
It is not for me to decide what is wrong or right, as the answers are not coherent to me.
What I only want to say, if someone wants to get to straight point by asking who is stealing map- layouts, I just can't get it being randomized by opinions which are defended by irrational quotes.
You might say my temper is a little hazzardious, but maybe I just can't get used by
the agony a clear answer can minimize the reason of aking.
But go ahead, I will cheque my dictionary and see if there are better words to defend my offspring, still good friends anyway.
But may I know what you mean with QMD, so this Sancho can take it defends, and cut it up in a shorter way.
There's Nothing New Under The Sun...
Just reading Gamespy's rather good 25 smartest gaming moments (a counterpoint to the recent, excellent 25 dumbest moments) and it reminded me of this thread:

The year is 1979, and first-year Computer Science student Roy Trubshaw... Then, while tinkering with the university's DEC SYSTEM 10, they discovered a powerful exploit: In effect, several users could access the same database. Suddenly it was possible for several players to play a game together... Eventually he had created a representation of the first house his parents had bought, with several rooms as well as a road and a garden outside. All in text, of course! Players could log into the game and move around from room to room by typing simple verbs...

How come everyone's first attempt at mapping is the house they live in, an environment clearly unsuitable for gaming purposes??

We'll never know!
I Built My House
but it looked awesome!
I Never Did That...
strange, but true.
Wrath:
That's because you live in a dank, grotty hole in the ground, and your meagre mapping skills don't extend to natural terrain.
Ontranto Stealage
The mine half is 80% of RCDM10.

The third map is a modified steal of the riverboat map from the Cryptic Passage addon for Blood, available through HOTU.
using RL (real life) arch as a basis for a map is not a bad idea. but like everything else "all things in moderation"

Rebuilding the quad at your school, or your house, or where you work might be good practice with the editor, but sucks as a complete proj. . .

BUT. . .
there are elements of each that might be cool. Maybe the sidewalk pattern in the quad is cool. maybe the way the deck overlooks the yard is cool. maybe the entry and foyer to your workplace is cool.

the trick is identifying those parts that can successfully make the translation from RL to GL (=
What About...
the translation from LG to SNG?
Metl
that's different, 'cause then you're working backwards through the inventory
Kell:
RL to GL is also backwards through the inventory.

yeah, I realized after I hit Submit :P
Dranz!
Release TEH FUCKING REPUBLIC MAP already!!
