I've been playing the beta for about 2 weeks now, and I'm impressed with the amount of polish, the distinctive art style, and the amount of refinement apparent in the design.
On the other hand, I never played the original TF or TFC, so I can't make any comparisons between this version and prebvious incarnations.
Team Fortress 2 was announced in 1997 or so. Good that they actually shipped it, although it probably got redone several times. I wonder when this version's design started.
One thing that is neat about this game is how the different player classes allow different types of players to compete. You can be a twitch gamer and play sniper or scout, which are very reflex-oriented classes. Or you could have lousy reflexes but if you have good tactical thinking abilities, excel at being an engineer. Being a spy is a whole psychological game where you have to act convincingly like whatever your disguise looks like, including being conscious of where in the base the enemy sees you and which direction you are running.
i remember the old team fortress. looked more "real" and was more war and stuff.
wish that one had been release. looked very cool back then. :-)
I Meant The Old Teamfortress 2
There are so many photo-realistic military-themed shooters, I'm glad they didn't do that. But I suppose that's purely a matter of preference; there are a lot of people that didn't like Windwaker's art style but I loved it.
The old TF2 was cool because I remember they were going to implement a Commander class which each team could only have one of, and he played the map like a RTS. He could select units and move give them orders, etc etc.
Compared to TFC, it's very similar but there are some differences. Scouts can double jump now, don't have caltrops, (in fact no class has grenades any more), has a shot gun instead of a machine gun, medics can't infect opponents and instead have "Uber", can heal around corners, etc etc etc. Mechanically it's a lot different but they kept the overarching class design intact (ie, what goals they serve on the battlefield.) Oh, and I don't remember spy having backstab or invisibility, which makes the Spy the #1 asshole class for me. I hate spies.
Who wants to map for TF2? I do!
First Time I Have Been Sucked Into
multi player gaming since the first Team Fortress. Backstab rules!
We've Got This Awesome Func_group
let's get a goddamn game of this going already. I'm not playing with the unwashed masses.
NOBODY TOUCH SASHA.
I'm up for pinging 450 and getting owned any day. Somebody pick a server?
More like LAGaran. Haha.
Yeah, That's It
it was lag, yeah
I'm still really impressed by the overall design of the game, be it visual or even with the sounds and music, which are original and fit perfectly. The animations are also very pleasant to watch.
And yeah, they simplified it compared to TF and TFC, but I find alot more fun than either of those, so whatever.
Man Can't Wait To Play This
the footage i've seen makes it look like a pixar film! Mega-props to valve for making it not look like generic urban combat shooter 3000 (or GUCS3K for short)
i like the motion blur because it really feels like a pixar film, but it's way too distracting to leave it on during normal play. :(
GET BEHIND ME DOCTAH!
YAAAARRRR HAHAHAHHAHAHA CRY SOME MORE
Heavy Weapons guy is the best character ever. :)
this is quite possibly the greatest machinima ever, made in TF2
anyway, i remember the old tf2 was pretty much the only one back then with a theme like that. though i dont remember much. this was back in 199 8 or so.
cant say that i am really excited about the new tf2, or any multiplayer game (because i suck too much at them) but the videos valve has for tf2 are awesome as hell! they should do a movie or something. :-)
god, how high is your mouse sensitivity? I didn't even notice the motion blur at all until I'd been playing for an hour straight.
and I think it's awesome.
How do you set up Hammer for TF2? Can't find an FGD anywhere. Shazbot :(
Medics And Heavies
I've had the most fun being the medic to someone's heavy, but it seems to be a lot like being in a bad relationship most times.
You know, you spawn, look around the room, spot each other, and already you kind of know what to do. It feels right. But the other shoe slowly drops, he turns out to be kind of a bad influence, leading you into situations you can't get out of. You try to distance yourself and he just gets really desperate and clingy, needing to be near you constantly, jealously yelling "MEDIC" even when you're together let alone around any other wounded soldiers. Eventually you come to your senses and it's like, "You know, heavy, I don't think we should see each other any more. We're always close when you need me, but you're never looking my way when I need you. We can still be friends, but, I just wanna be able to heal other people for a change."
that was beautiful, Lun.
I thought it was my LCD :)
and after so much trouble finding happiness eventually you discover you should have been playing for the other team!
actually, just noticed it's in all the new versions of the source engine has it.
it's ok in the sp games (ep2, portal), but it still bugs me in an mp game like tf2.
i use 5 sensitivity, but i look around a lot ;)
I use 8.3 and still I have had no issues with the motion blur at all, its the most tastefully applied special effect so far from valve, it never gets in the way and makes moving objects look sexy :)
I use about a 10 on mouse sens, and I have blur turned off. I had it on initially, but wasn't sure how much processing power it was taking away, so turned it off to try and help my odd graphics problems. Not sure if it actually did anything, so I might want to try it again.
I Use 15.1
Motion blur is fine with me. It feels nice and smooth and looks good, so where's the problem?
There is no problem. Everything should always look like a pixar movie, always. Everything.
And Pixar Movies
Should look like real movies.
played this on my friend's laptop and it's awesome. I had a couple of round where I didn't have much fun as the scout and the heavy gunner, but when I switched to the soldier and started to get the hang of things it quickly became amazing! I love the feel of the rocket launcher, it's nice because it feels like any Quake 1 / Q3A rocket experience you have carries over and I was having no problems blowing people up.
The pixar look is wonderful, perfect for this type of game, and the motion blur is just right, as most people have been saying. If anything I'd like a little more, it certainly wasn't distracting.
So yeah... I need to get the orange box thingy. And a new PC to play it on. Damn.
I Am Currently Playing
occasionally on a server in the evenings set up for a bunch of Raven ex-pats, but anyone's welcome to follow me in if you see the box pop up.
I would follow you into the gates of hell.
(But only coop Doom2 so you'd get killed first.)
I need to find some people to play tf2 with. Jumped on a pub last night and it was chaos.
Has everyone got headsets?
Yes, and even better, I've actually got a Ventrilo server running, version 2.3.0. Add me to your Steam friends list and I'll share the details.
I've found that Steam's own voice-comm is shit, as is TS.
I'm loving this game. Valve nailed everything from the visual styles to the feel of the guns to the level design. Great, great game.
Funnily enough I never liked Team Fortress Classic. Bad (sometimes awful) level design, horridly slow gameplay and crappy graphics. This, ahhhh, this however feels like a true successor to TF. It's very definitely a spiritual follower of the ideals of TF, which is why I'm enjoying it so much. Did I post these already?
Anyway, let's see some screenhots of those maps, people.
Did They Release The SDK Yet?
Or do you mean screens of the levels they released with the game?
SDK just updated to support TF2, according to the steam news page. (also notoriousray posted it in the portal thread :)
/me hugs metlslime.
I'm just going to come right out and say it.
TF2 is probably the closest thing to a perfect game that I've ever seen.
That is all.
TF2 is at least the best game of 2007.
I have it, but since I have never ever played deathmatch games I don't know where to start. How do I find a team I can play for?
Uhhh, you hop on a server and watch the level introduction. Join RED or BLU. Then pick a class. Kill the other team.
i wouldn't say it's the best of all time, but it's at least the best of what i've played this year... art style rocks, gameplay is simple enough to get after playing only for a half hour or less but complex enough to allow for a lot of cool shit (tm) to happen during play.
all in all, valve really did well with the two non half life titles this time.
I most just play on a 24/7 Lazytown server. Great map! I like going sniper. One time I stayed alive for 29 minutes getting 53 kills, 91 points and gave out 12,200 damage whilst dominating most of the team.
Heavy is the funniest guy the way he runs around and shouts when he is doing well. A jolly big guy who liks to kill people with his beloved gun... nothing wrong with that.
I know nothing about the game and I have never played more than 5 minutes in a multiplayer FPS.
Is it worth me getting?
(oh actually looking at my Steam games list I think I already have it...)
Come Play With Us, Kinny
Some gameplay stats for TF2:
Scroll to the bottom for very cool (if not especially useful) heatmaps that show where most deaths occur. This is really cool, though the hotspots area all around the control points, which is obvious and not very illuminating. I'd love to see the same maps but with the contrast shifted so that the blue-to-green scale was more obvious, so we can see how it varies in all of the hallways and random other spots.
What is quite interesting is the Win ratios of each team. Check the ratio for ctf_2fort, which obviously should be 50/50 (while ignoring stalemates), instead Blu seems to win alot more than Red. Some people suggested that this is due to the Blu door in the startup screen being in the middle, and the Red on the side, thus when the number of players on the server isn't pair, Blu is most likely the team to have an extra player, as most players just click right away when reaching the team choice page.
Maybe there's another explanation though?
I like the slight green line along the tracks on Well, Trains are so imbalanced!
someone suggested that red player skins are easier to see than blue ones.
That would probably be a better, simpler explanation. =)
Haven't Played (yeah)
But I remember in Goldeneye I always used the spetnaz in the grey camo because he just faded into the walls.
Blue's a difficult colour to get right in games for players or enemies because psychologically / visually your brain doesn't register it as much.
I always noticed how alot of faster twitch games added environment maps or animated textures to blue players - like in Quake 3.
