Minecraft!
Here's a specific thread to stop spamming mind-numbing details into the Other PC Games thread.

Discussion to the level of mind-numbing detail of the game, Minecraft.

To Start The Ball Rolling
So we've started a MP server and have decided to build a pub. We've got the ground floor with a fireplace, bar, jukebox(s) and tables and have started on the disco one floor below which has a floor of gold and obsidian.

Next up is a jacuzzi on the roof. Just a shame we're all hopeless nerds - need to convince the girls in the office to buy the game.

Not sure if that'd make it any less geeky mind.
You Have To Pay For Minecraft Dont You?
Even though its in alpha?
Yeah
There was a free weekend a while back because the server went down.

I don't see it as any different than buying a game on Steam early.

It's a pretty clever way of doing it as well - open sandbox, see what the players enjoy doing, build the game around that.
Although
I think the level editor version is free to play, but I can't see anyone here having fun with such a radically cut down world editing tool.

Part of the fun is getting fucked over by enemies.
Heh - Im Curious About Playing The Game
Will have to cough up sooner or later I guess :))

i can't say as i want to get into it (i have enough stuff eating up my time already) but it has been kinda amusing reading people's stories and looking at pics in the other thread, so any screenshots & anecdotes welcome :D
Nerdcraft

I'm not playing minecraft but from the few videos I've seen I do appreciate the pigs and the square sun!
My Tower Of Despair
It could have been a tower of happiness but I liked the sound of despair.

The black vertical shadow in the middle is an obsidian obelisk and the lava on the right is a pillar of fire about half the height of the tower, and forms a moat around it. Need to continue ripping out all the wood.
Heh
Nice, I think it requires more lavafalls to be a proper tower of despair. :)
Hm
Good point, it's a bit too friendly really - pictures hung everywhere and so on.
Just Applied This Texture Pack
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=25676

Very recommended - the original textures are pretty shite.
Mm...
Not a huge fan of that pack, the colours are kind of stale, and he replaced the square sun with a circular one, which sucks. =\
Those Textures
are fantastic. Only doubling the resolution is a good call, and the JRPG style fits the game perfectly. The original textures (and even, the game) is conspicuously missing any defined style or theme (unless 'programmer art' counts).

I think the version without flowers is best... with them it looks a bit messy and the tiling is a bit grating.
Meh
I think they are too grey, and I repeat, I really hate that he replaced the sun.
More looking forward to this set :

It's simpler and fits better in my opinion. And it keeps the original resolution (changing the resolution borks some of the textures, like water and lava aren't working in that RPG pack).
Fire Looks Bad In It As Well

They all look awful. Where's the Quake texture pack?
To Be Fair.
The entire game ~looks~ utterly awful. I doubt that's changing any time soon...

They all look awful. Where's the Quake texture pack?
that would be pretty damn badass, honestly...

are the textures 64x64? you could do a straight port of quake textures in most cases as long as you didn't do idbase.
Ugh
Shambler: the game looks shit but it has charm. It somewhat reminds me of Quake thanks to the lack of filtering, low texture resolution and feel of the lighting and torches... not to mention the utterly shit simple but fun monster ai. Finding Shamblers and Vores lurking in the caves would be truly terrifying though :)

I've become kind of obsessed with building and maintaining my castle, at the back of which I am digging an enormous hole so that I can grow a tree from the bottom of the world to the top. However, due to the bugs that stop a lot of the game from working correctly in multiplayer, I am getting a little bored. I want to go exploring and feel in danger. When I get lost at night I want to have to hunker down in a cave somewhere.

At the moment players are invincible in multiplayer survival games, which means you have to like building stuff to enjoy it. I do enjoy that side, but I think I might take a little breather from the game until monsters and damage are working properly.

This is the server I am playing on with friends from work: http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/9278/20101001day.png (4mb)

The big grey castle is mine. Someone who joined recently built two really fucking ugly towers and kind of spoiled the area a bit. Kind of want to chizzle them away when he is not playing.
Woah
thats neat, how did you take that pic? Or is it a server generated thing?

Loving the Japanese style building going on as well as the castle =)

does the world go on forever or is there eventually an impassible barrier?
IIRC
It just keeps making it up as you go.
Yeah
It's infinite horizontally - it just keeps generating until it fills your entire harddisk - if you just keep going.

There's a limit for below, don't know about above.

For the no-dying in MP, the same for me. Half the game is broken right now, which just leaves the building stuff.
Than
that screen shot makes me want to play roller coaster tycoon for some reason

They all look awful. Where's the Quake texture pack?

Haha, I was thinking the same thing yesterday! Looks like you only really need to edit one big PNG file too, so it wouldn't be too hard...
