50 Best FPS On PC.
You've all read the RPS article, spooged over Quake being no. 1 this year, LOLed at most of the other choices, and no doubt assumed you - or we as a community - can do better. So let's do so.

Post your top 10 FPS! (Any more and it gets a bit TL,DR)

So, FPS, let's keep it primarly FPS, if it's FP and has significant amounts of shooting and/or is designed to be perfectly playable in that way, then it's in. So some FPS-RPG hybrids (e.g. DX (maybe SS, I dunno)) will be valid, as will FPS-melee hybrids like Vermintide or Dark Messiah as they have a lot of shooting. Full on RPGs like Skyrim are too broad so they're OUT, as will survival horror like SOMA and strat-focused hybrids like BZ and Mech games as they're too specialised, and games with the emphasis on not shooting like Thief are out too. And keep in mind the words of RPS:

Being a little more ruthless about whats genuinely great to play now, as opposed to being included primarily for their historical importance.

That's being a little more ruthless....a little.

Do your worst, Quake fans....

RAGE (a flawed gem)

Clive Barker's Jericho (barely playable unless you're good at it; compensates by being evil and oppressive)

Dark Salvation (I'm gonna be a hipster here, and pretend that I liked how retardedly unforgiving this amateur mod of a game is)

49. Requiem: Avenging Angel
50. Serious Sam: The First Encounter

Special mention: Mirror's Edge - would be ranked around 13th if the shooter elements were more prominent.
Outcast wasn't actually first person. My bad. Scratch it and put Deus Ex 2 after SS:TFE.
The suffering and suffering 2 were underrated, but good
1. Dishonored
2. Doom
3. Quake
4. DX:HR
5. Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Those are the ones I've played through several times, way more than twice. After that it's hard for me to pick any stand outs, too many good ones to list.
Editing The First Post.
Was lying awake in the night (a bad habit my brain should really stop), trying to find a good cut-off point for "FPS", and deciding that Vermintide and Dark Messiah should be allowed. So they're in but the cut-off is before Skyrim which although is quite playable as an FP with a lot of S, there's too much focus on other stuff. And ofc Thief is out due to definite focus on not S.

Also added enouragment to stick to 10, because Mugwump's post made my monitor go all funny.

Interesting to see how many people who have Quake very high also have Unreal very high, for all of Unreal's "at-the-time" beauty and less fun physics, I think the directness of the monster blasting is more comparable to Quake than first appearances suggest.

Nice to be reminded of Undying, what a hidden gem that was.

If I had more space then Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite, Undying, UT, Rage, Wheel Of Time, Dark Messiah, Titanfall 2, in fact any of those could go in my 9/10 spots.
1) Skyrim
2) Morrowind
3) Oblivion
4) Thief DP
5) Thief2
6) Wolfenstein 2009
7) Quake
8) Quest for glory series
9) Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines
10)Arx Fatalis
11)The Wheel of time
18)Quake 2
19)Half Life2
i completely missed an FPS term. So Quest for glory series don't belong to this list
Ur list is now:

1) Wolfenstein 2009
2) Quake
3)The Wheel of time
10)Quake 2

Honourary mentions: Half Life2, Heretic/Hexen
Unreal Was Great
But UT is the game that really sunk it's claws into me
1) System Shock
2) Quake
3) Halo 2
4) Half-Life 2
5) Battlefield 2142
6) Delta Force
7) Half-Life
Will There Be A Tally At The End Of This, Like A Poll?
If That's The Case
my list would be very different. I was just adding titles I didn't see already mentioned.
What Killpixel Said
Though it wouldn't be that different.
Off The Top
Doom engine games(all of them)
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
Tribes 2
Quake 2
Unreal Tournament
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
GoldenEye 007
Battlezone 2
The Elder Scroll I: Arena
System Shock 2
Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear
Ghost Recon
Serious Sam

Sure the Elder Scrolls games are role playing, but very 1st person hacking and slashing with lots of spell and projectile firing.
If we're including Elder Scrolls games, then Oblivion gets to be in my top 3 for sure.

Skyrim was too similar to Oblivion to have any impact on me, and I could never really get into Morrowind for some reason.
I could never really get into Morrowind

Okay, Lets Do This
this is my top 10 ish

Quake (and mods)
Skyrim (if that counts, it's not really a "shooter")
Quake 3
Portal 1 & 2 (let's face it they were so short they might as well be one game)
Clive Barker's Undying
Battlefield 1942
CS 1.6(pre-source)
mechanics were too broken and the setting was just a big grey heightmap. *shrug*
Oh Crap Forgot Portal
Hmm FP games then, not necessarily S

Quake + SoA
Half-Life 2 + Eps 1,2
Portal 1,2
Doom 3
I forgot Portal two (should rank like 7th or 8th).

And System Shock 2 (should rank like 4th).

oh well. If you ever get a wild hair I recommend you give it a second chance. Here are few shots from my current install: 1,2,3

This is without a "graphic overhaul" mod as they tend to look like dog ass. Aside from removing fog and fixing fov/resolution, the only mods are bug and balance fixes.

A few of the games you guys chose are not really first person shooters though. I wouldn't put Dishonored, Thief, Arx Fatalis or the Elder Scroll games in that category.
Dishonoured Is Shooty Enough.
The rest are definitely OUT. Including Battlezone2 which along with Skyrim would have been in my top ten.

Take it more seriously you disgusting plebs.
Damn that does look nice. Hmmm. Well, if I ever get the urge to play it again I may give you a shout to request details of your setup.
I vote Shadow of the Colossus on PS2. The camera's so janky, half the time it is unintentionally first person lol. (Still one of the best games ever made, despite that).
So Here Would Be My Complete List
1. Quake
2. Challenge ProMode Arena
3. Unreal
4. Half-Life
5. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
6. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat
7. The Ultimate Doom
8. Duke Nukem 3D
9. Unreal Tournament 99
10. Killing Floor
11. Natural Selection
12. Blood
13. Metro: Last Light
14. Doom 64
15. Half-Life: Opposing Force
16. Team Fortress Classic
17. Doom 2
18. Team Fortress 2 (when it used to be good)
19. Heretic
20. Metro 2033
21. Final Doom
22. Shadow Warrior (97)
23. Painkiller
24. Killing Floor 2
25. Counter-Strike
26. Day of Defeat
27. Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
28. Doom 4
29. Quake 3 Arena
30. Hexen 2
31. Wolfenstein 3D/Spear of Destiny
32. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
33. Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
34. Serious Sam: The First Encounter (very similar games but SE is slightly better)
35. Red Orchestra
36. SWAT 4
37. Operation Flashpoint
38. Soldier of Fortune
39. Arma 3
40. Tribes
41. Natural Selection 2
42. Tribes: Ascend (when it used to be good)
43. Serious Sam 3: BFE
44. F.E.A.R.
45. Unreal Tournament 3
46. Half-Life 2
47. Doom 3
48. Crysis
49. No One Lives Forever
50. Insurgency

Not included:
- Thief: The Dark Project and The Metal Age: not first person shooters.
- Deus Ex, System Shock 1 and 2: shooting not principal aspect of the game, especially in the case of SS2 and DX.
- Dishonored 1 and 2: more of a shooter than Thief but still, shooting is not the principal aspect.
- Bioshock 1 and 2: same as System Shock but with worse shooting.
I Made Shooting The Principle Aspect Of DX, DH, And BS. HTH.
SS1 And SS2 Are Clearly Shooters
Unless you don't want HL2 to count because of all the crowbar sections, extensive gravity gun sections and loads of puzzles. Heck 20-30% of the Half-Life 2 doesn't involve shooting. More if you love the gravity gun (okay might be reasonably construed).
Heh, title said 50 so I gave you 50...

@Thief out: sure the focus is on stealth but since you can shoot all the enemies I think it still qualifies.

Hmm, actually kind of difficult to decide so this may be out of order/change depending on mood:

1. Serious Sam TSE (I love TFE almost as much but TSE provides more variety).
2. Left 4 Dead 2
3. Quake
4. Unreal Tournament
5. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
6. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: SoC
7. DOOM 2
8. Might and Magic: Dark Messiah
9. F.E.A.R.
10. Bioshock

When I actually think about it, I don't play all that many shooters. The top five are much more set in stone than the bottom half.
Personal favorites. If there is series, I only choose my favorite.

1. Quake 1
2. Silent Hill 3
3. Tomb Raider 1
4. Doom 2
5. Duke Nukem 3d
6. Tomb Raider 1
7. Ghostbusters (Genesis)
8. Dead by Daylight (multiplayer)
9. Don't starve Together (multiplayer)
10. Shadow of the Beast (Amiga)
1. Quake
2/3. Doom/Doom 2 (Doom for the atmosphere and level design, Doom 2 for the superior gameplay rhythm, they tie for me and shift by my mood)
4. Blood
5. STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
6. Unreal
7. Hexen
8. Duke Nukem 3d
9. Rise of the Triad
10. Fallout: New Vegas
Doom/Doom 2 (Doom for the atmosphere and level design, Doom 2 for the superior gameplay rhythm, they tie for me and shift by my mood

aye, it's probably safe to say that the majority of people who've spent a reasonable amount of time with doom hold this opinion.
Level design is a broad term. I'd say each one of the two games nailed a different aspect of it.
Seems like I really like Tomb Raider, lets replace slot 3 with Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (since fighting games are awesome)
FPS = First Person Shooter
And PC stands for "personal computer", typically IBM-compatible.
Seems like you have no idea what FPS means.
Sorry, I read title wrong. Yeah, not all of those are FPS games at all. New List:
1. Quake 1
2. Doom 2
3. Duke Nukem 3d

That's it*
1. Quake
2. Quake 2
3. Half-Life
4. Fallout 3
5. Doom 3
6. Crysis
7. Unreal
8. Duke Nukem 3D
9. Return to Castle Wolfenstein
10. Mass Effect 2
Funny How Doom3 Gets On A Few Lists.
Given it got a fair amount if semi-disappointment in this community. I did like it quite a lot myself....although definitely prefer Doom4....
I thought about listing Doom 3 for all the things that I like about it, but decided not to because of all the small details that I think they got wrong.

Like, for example, one little thought about the main villain's laughter makes me want to forget the game even exists.
As we all know, the trick to liking Doom 3 is to evaluate it for what it is, rather than what it's not (Classic Doom).
Most of the games on my list I love because they have a big community of mods behind them. Doom 3 was one of them.
My Top 3
2.Super 3d Noah's Ark
1.Halflife 3

my definition of irony
you forgot about "Stalin Subway" and "Dusk 12".
