Anyway, discuss films...

Yeah, it's difficult, it never helps a movie to have everyone telling you that a movie is the best thing ever before you see it (e.g. went to see the artist recently, and while I enjoyed it, I did also spend most of the movie thinking the main character needed a big slap). But if you know nothing about the movie before you see it, I guess you end up seeing an awful lot of drivel...
Drive
i think it helped that i downloaded the soundtrack as soon as it came out (not intentionally, i was looking for something else and thought why not) and got to know and like a couple of the songs at least a month or so before seeing the movie. after that it was great hearing them in context

i'd heard it was gory too; and while it was pretty extreme in places it was only so in very short bursts (ie. if you turn your head for one second at those times you'll probably miss it) which stopped it from feeling gratuitous or gross-out. i can't say how well it would have worked for me without those moments; i think they benefitted the scary/foreboding feel well

i can pretty comfortably call it my favourite film of 2011, although there are still a few key ones i haven't seen yet (hugo being one of them, hoping to catch that soon)
Hugo Cabret
Meh. Well, I mean it wasn't bad, but I didn't expect Martin Scorsese to make a children's movie. I went to watch it, because it's said to have such stunning 3D effects - didn't James Cameron claim they were better than Avatar? At any rate, I wasn't that impressed with them, often they seemed unnecessarily blurry. Could be because it was on a farily small screen, but I doubt it. Doesn't make me hyped to watch more 3D movies, especially considering how outrageously expensive they are.

Well suited for Spirit. No gore; may contain remotely sad or emotional scenes, though, so be warned!!!

yeah, that movie looked super emo so I won't bother.

Speaking of Scorsese I watched Casino again recently. Much better than I remember - quite a good film. Although there was a little too much focus on Sharon Stone's grotty character.

Also watched Brooklyn's Finest the other day, not Scorsese but same sort of films he makes. It was pretty good too, though not as epic as it could have been. Go in with no expectations and it's enjoyable.
Haeundae
My wife's work has a disaster movie night every so often and I went along for this one (it was released as "tidal wave" in English). It's a very very odd movie -- first Korean movie I've seen, but I assume they're not all like this?

The bit where the container ship explodes and fires containers into skyscrapers from across the bay was particularly genius.
Negke
not sure what screen you saw it on, but IMHO it was hands down the best use of 3d to date. Although maybe I'm biased because I also thought it was one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I watched a good movie! SleepwalkR!

The Untouchables (1987)
About catching Al Capone in the 1920s. Music was annoying at times as it has not aged too well. Great cast and everything. Baby scene was a bit too annoying imo. Overall a very thrilling nice movie!
Yeah
That's a good movie.

Young Adult (2011): Pure shit.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008): Absolutely great. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Uh
I'm pretty sure that should be the other way around.

Adventures of Tintin: Loved it. Like Indiana Jones (the good ones) on steroids. Personally thought it was hilarious, the action was great, kept a great pace.

Super 8: Also really good. Also kept a great pace. Pretty good if you like 80s feeling adventure movies, similar to the Goonies but a lot funner.
The Action Took
me right out of Super 8, IMHO it felt like it was from another movie, way over the top.
We Need To Talk About Kevin
Another one suffering from the hype a bit maybe? Clearly all very well made and acted, but (although I haven't read it) I think the book is all about the mothers -- probably rather warped -- perception of events, and very much from her point of view. A movie inevitably tells things from the camera's point of view to some extent, and so feels more objective -- and thus bits of the film didn't really ring true to me.
Checked Out Some Tv
on the plane, namely An Idiot Abroad and Parks and recreation. Both seem like they are worth watching in their entirety. Anyone seen them here?

Parks is good if you like the American version of The Office. Very similar (made by the same people, so no doubt.)

An Idiot Abroad I was able to see a few episodes of today. It's very entertaining. Not always funny, but still very cool to see other cultures. Like if Ricky Gervais did Globe Trekker or something similar. I am convinced Karl Pilkington is not nearly as stupid as Ricky and Steve say he is, but is in fact a comic genius. But he does such a good job you're not really sure he is a comic genius but is in fact an idiot. Abroad. I like it.
I've Never Warmed To
the US Office but Parks seems a bit more likeable.

As for Pilkington, I agree, but he is very funny.
Nitin
Nope! young adult was about a cunt being a cunt which I could not stand. I watched about one third, then forwarded to the end (stopping briefly at some awkward fake boobs). gave it 2/10. seemed like a movie for bitter women. :(

Forgetting Sarah Marshall on the other hand was great fun. nice humor, good story, feel good conclusion. I expected some mindless teenage college movie, heh.
I Havent Seen Young Adult Yet
but I've liked all 3 of Jason Reitman's last 3.

FSM was ok, there were three pretty funny scenes but the rest was pretty average.
We Need To Talk About Kevin
couldn't even watch the first half of it, I get the point that it was trying to be awkward and rank. The fact that I can't stand to look at John C Reilly's ugly face and wonder why in hell he's an actor in the first place might have something to do with it.

On the other hand, Young Adult was awkward in a good way, I thought. Instead of giving you a happy ending or romantic plot, it's just constantly awkward, plus Theron's acting is awesome, her freaking out the party 3/4 of the way through I found impressive and amusing. While it's definitely not a great movie it's certainly a good commentary on the whole "113 is the new 13" thing where each generation takes longer to stop acting like they're 13 than the one before.

FSM, I couldn't really get past the fact that in real life there's no way that tall dorky loser would even get close to a honey like Kirsten Bell. Or Mila Kunis for that matter. Too unrealistic.

heh, you should check out the boyfriends/husbands of trophy wives more often then. thankfully looks ain't everything. and people have different taste in things and people.
Leon.
Good fun film.
City Of Men
Watched City of Men as well. Interesting movie, the Rio slums are an amazing place to film. I just watched Fast 5 as well, and they looked even more fascinating in that movie.

Anyway it said on the cover it's from the same makers as City of God. But different actors, location, story, direction, writers... it has nothing in common with City of God other than being in Rio.

I definitely enjoyed City of God a lot more than City of Men. There was more of a storyline going on with drug gangs and the different characters. City of Men was really just about 2 boys with the gangs a bit of a backstory. Would have been more interesting if Midnight and Fasto (the gang leaders) were the story focus; they were both scary.
AFAIK
Meirelles only attached his name as producer but didnt have any hands on involvement with the content.

Other interesting Brazil filmed movies are Boca (Sao Paulo)and Elite Squad. Both are worth watching but neither are at the City of God level.
