So what would you prefer to pay to see in 3D at the movies... a big OTT cheesy action flick full of awesome action sequences and superheros... or a slow, art house european drama with no cgi or action at all... but it's got a story.
Hollywood wants to make it's money from movie tickets, so it's not going to waste it's time having a script written by Woody Allen. Teens and 20yo's don't give a shit about character depth, dialogue and meaningful storyline.
And your right Drew, even the Dark Knight movies are cheesy a little as well. It's a superhero flick, and with Avengers it's a fuckin overdose of superheroes, so it was always going to be an extreme action and cgi extravaganza.
I enjoyed it anyway, it was probably better than I expected.
At least Black Widow's struggles with her past and, actually, having her as one of the leading characters in the film was all good. I really like Scarlett she's such a hunny. And some of the characters weren't quite as b&w in good vs evil... Hawkeye switched sides (though not of his own doing), Loki was the stereotypical Hollywood bad guy, and the superheroes even had a bit of in-fighting.
Thor and Captain America really suck though. Thor was completely useless in the film, while using more of a comedy actor like Chris Evans to play a completely stiff Capt America was a terrible choice.
Ironman/Downey was really good, though I tire of Downey playing the same character in every movie. I don't like him much, or the Ironman character - he should have been easily killed so many times - but someone needed to carry some humour.
Shame we had to see so much Sam L Jackson... he's so overrated with the same fucking character he's done in every movie since Pulp Fiction. And WTF was that jump out of the helicopter at the start? Since when did he develop superpowers?
Same with Black Widow and Hawkeye - some of their action sequences were too OTT considering they're just normal people.
My main gripe though was the way Hulk suddenly decided he's no longer an out of control beast wrecking everything in his path, and instead now has allies. Since when is he able to "think"?

I mean Loki WASN'T the stereotypical arch villain. Thank god the leader of the aliens didn't make more than 5mins appearance, because he was cheesy as hell.
 Err

kona why do you have to watch 3D at the cinemas?
And I assume I'm not the only one who does watch drasma movies at the cinema along with the action stuff.

But hey - everybody loves super cheesy, super super OTT films. About Superman. Except for people who have actually seen a real film, with real acting in it.
is actually pretty funny! :)
Even Life in a Day (2011) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1687247/ was ultimately "nice try, but fuck off you fucking piece of shit hollywood style direction/editing" for me. I simply don't get how people are so easily able to not see through all the hollywood shite that's fed to them. "Oh, so there just was some sad stuff, naturally they show something to cheer me up now." Fuck this, I'm not a 9-year old, I actualy want to reflect on things. If it's sad, so be it, I can live with that. The "Oh, it was all just fun, disregard!"-rollercoaster you're always thrown in after something like this is so obvious.
I stopped half-way through Babyface (1933), should I continue?

"That was my point yes. Just because everyone you know loved it doesn't mean I and everyone else has to too and can't express a different view. More people than not also love Avatar, Titanic and Two and a Half Men."
Right. I reacted the way I did because your reply came off as angry and dismissive. If that wasn't your intent, I apologize.

He seems like a reasonable guy, though I don't think anything he's ever done has interested me, and he uses retarded "hip-hop" terms (yes that term deserves scare scaredy scarer quotes these days).
I haven't seen the movie yet, and I guess it is an action movie that'd be better in theatres, but... I have reservations. I'll probably just go watch it tomorrow and then resent resent resent.
I get the same feel from Joss Whedon as I do from Tarantino.
I find their writing smug and all their characters feel interchangable. A lot of style over substance without the weirdness of early Luc Besson.
I generally think comic book movies are terrible but actually, I kind of sort of didn't completely hate Thor. I actually enjoyed it, because it felt like it knew exactly what it was more than the others. It had a simple cliche brat to hero story, and the effects get entertainingly trippy by the end.
'We drank, we fought, he made his ancestors proud.'
 Avengers VERSUS NITIN.

I always prefix nitin's reviews with I am a hardcore film buff and my highly over-qualified review of this film is:
;)
 Joss Whedon
I don't see any "hip-hop" language, whatever that means. If you are interested in his body of work, I suggest you check out Firefly. It's exceptional. And if you do, you'll realize that he's nothing like Tarantino at all.
 Heh

Yeah, Firefly is fun! Has some seriously bangable ladies in it too :))))

i was put off watching firefly initially because i wanted to watch serenity first (as per a friend's suggestion), but will likely never get round to that now; i assume it works as a story in its own right too?

Pretty sure it's meant to be the other way around, at least that's what I remember others saying in this thread.

yeah... i wouldn't watch the film before the show. i mean, you can; the characters are introduced quickly but fairly well, but the story is much better if you watch it in order.
 Ugh

and not Firefly yet. It works as a standalone film, but not more than an above average one.

Don't really see what all the fuss is about with Firefly, it's an ok series but it's super clich, and often quite cheesy. Definitely watchable (mostly because it doesn't take itself too seriously) but I'm always surprised by the hardcore fan following it has?
I wish there were some really good sci-fi series around. :(
Prometheus better be good.
 Bal
I think it might be related to its history. Also, it's almost 10 years old by now, so I guess it's not aging very well. But the fact that it has such hardcore fans that identify so much with it is definitely related to its super quick cancellation and bad treatment by the Fox network.

Firefly has some of the best character writing that I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

So you don't watch much then?
Just getting it in before anyone else.

Hey, opinions differ but I would suspect that anyone arguing that the writing on that show isn't great (or at least, good) isn't arguing in good faith.
 Well
#4668 posted by bal on 2012/05/11 20:21:40
The dialog was usually pretty good, some funny bits, but the actual story didn't really interest me, found it kind of boring and not very original.
But yeah the shows fine, guess it's just overly popular cause of the lack of any other good sci-fi stuff around.
I hope you will all agree that the ship is ugly as hell, but I guess maybe that was voluntary. :D

firebird would have made more sense, seeing as it looks like a giant chicken.

I used to enjoy Lexx. Up until like the second or third season before they returned to earth - I didn't see any more eps from that point on, but I dl'd them so i'll watch eventually.
Who else really enjoyed it?
