Film Thread.
I thought a trio of themed threads about other entertainment media might be good. If you're not interested, please just ignore the thread and pick some threads that interest you from here: http://celephais.net/board/view_all_threads.php

Anyway, discuss films...

Rewatch And Europa Report
Rewatched Dredd, yup still as good. FUCKING good. Mr (ahem Judge) Dredd is just beyond balls to the wall awesome, they really captured the dudes vibe. I heard rumors of sequel ?

Otherwise Europa Report very neat recovered footage space mission movie, liked it, had not heard of it even tho Moon and Gravity and other space themed scifi seems to have had fair publicity going round.
Good in any case.
Some Tv
BSG Final Season - Finally finished this series off, the last season was definitely the most uneven but there's a quite a few really good episodes (Sometimes a Great Notion comes to mind) and I was reasonably satisfied with the ending because it could have totally fallen apart but managed to actually not just avoid that but be reasonably consistent with what went before.

Mad Men Season 5 - This show is now up there with The Wire and Deadwood for me (oh my god shock horror no Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones in the top 3), there are 2 scenes in this season (between Peggy and Don) that stayed with me for days.

Boardwalk Empire Season 2 - I liked the first season but didnt love it, the second season though is a very noticeable improvement IMHO. All that setting up in s1 is carried through with in this season and its very involving. They kind of have to reset and restart going forward though so not sure how that will go.

Haven't seen BSG, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones or Boardwalk Empire... am I missing out a bit? haha. Ah well I did actually watch the BE pilot and found it utterly boring. BSG I wouldn't mind watching one day.

I watched The Hunger Games last night. Pretty much as expected, a gameshow movie where players have to fight for their lives etc. Oh how many times have we had this before, I can think of about a dozen. fuck I hate them. Although Battle Royale was actually pretty good. I assume Hunger Games will get good though in the follow up movies, the proper Dystopian future, hot chick vs the evil government type dealie. I guess at least it's realistic and she's not a Jason Stratham killing machine.
"realistic"
yeah right ;-)
Kona
I would only recommend BSG and GoT to you based on what you seem to like.
Game Of Thrones
Is pretty awesome.
American Hustle
Christian Bale really porked out for that one.

As for the plot, well I didn't see it coming.
World War Z
Watched this last night for the first time (before the New Year's Eve heavy drinking celebrating really got started). You have to buy in to the underlying zombie mechanism, but once you do it's all good. I decided it was reasonably plausible.

There were still some stupid moments, but overall I found it to be surprisingly entertaining. That's the whole point of a movie, isn't it? I didn't think it was a total waste of time and turn it off anyway.
Elysium
Odd one this. It all _sounds_ great, setting, cast, director, but it's just not that engaging.
Agreed,
I felt it spent too much time on the rather dull main character, and not enough exposition on how the world ended up how it did, and the mindset and culture of Elysium.

Kona: GOT is essential IMO, it really is as good as it's made out to be.
God Bless America
is nowhere near as good as the trailer promised. Or at least it was made out to be more comedic perhaps, it was actually quite a sinister film.
G R A V I T Y
I saw this tonight. Pretty good story. After watching it I realized that, basically the only actor was Sandra Bullock. Yeah, George Clooney was there and one other guy for a while anyway, but mostly just Sandra Bullock. And she did a very good job.

When it hit the fan (so to speak) the amount of space debris they needed to do the damage that was shown is pretty much not there. I don't think the world has put that much junk into space yet, and getting it to all home into one target is a whole 'nother story. Other than that it was pretty believable.

The special effects, free-fall stuff, space scenes, etc. all were very well done and convincing.

Sandra Bullock pretty much carries this show. She's a very attractive woman and turns 50 this year - hard to believe isn't it?
What The
no mention of Prisoners yet? Just watched and want to highly recommend it. Very thrilling, dark, drama thriller. I don't want to watch it again but enjoyed the ride.
Man Of Steel
Good in parts, boring in parts (indestructible characters thumping each other, yawn...). It made me want to see a version of the story that focused on his parents struggling to cope with a child with superman's powers!

Even will all the typical TV series character drama, I thought Smallville did provide the proper beginning story to the Superman character. I believe it even inspired (format / story layout wise) the BBC Merlin series, which is another favourite of mine.

I did not enjoy the Man of Suck, the story was dumb, the special effects over the top, the environment depressing and dark and I did not feel like the Superman character inspire me with any hope.

Prometheus Actually Explained (With Real Answers) - I found this and it might help people understand or not the movie more. The film sounds better after watching this video, I will have to give it another chance. I thought it was dumb but apparently I missed all the clues and did not read the special website.
Robocop Remake Scene 27
In Descending Order Of Rating
3 Idiots (2009): If you skip the dancing parts it is a funny and "deep" indian movie about some guys in university. I liked it a lot.

The Wolverine (2013): I liked it! Great work with music.

Big Night (1996): Pretty random but feel-good movie. Don't watch on an empty stomach.

PS: Still nothing about Prisoners? Watch it!
Lol Its Hardly Deep
but I agree that its one of the few recent hindi movies worth watching.

Also agree re music in Wolverine, didnt like movie overall but its not bad and the midway action scene + music was fantastic.

well, deeper than wolverine for sure!

Elysium was interesting.. but the villians just totally out shone Matt Damon i thought.

I'd put off seing Aeon Flux movie because i wanted to take in the MTV first. Anyway... they both blew me away :). Hard pressed to say which was better.

Captain Phillips
A mostly feel-good dramedy about the bumbling, bungling antics of a bunch of down-on-their-luck Somalian pirates who end up biting off more than they can chew with the attempted hijacking of a large US container ship.

Heavy on the slapstick, it's written as a sidequel/sequel to both Forrest Gump and Castaway, and I enjoyed it thoroughly, especially the heartwarming "Aww shucks, see we can all get along!" ending.

Three stars.

Huh, I did get quite a different feeling from it. It was grim and not feel good at all. Great movie!
