I picked map-making back up during the 2020 lockdowns, setting a massive challenge to translate a real-world historic ruin into Quake.
The castle in question is Newbury, Berkshire’s historic Donnington Castle ruins. The castle was a major strategic stronghold during the English Civil War, where it endured a brutal 20-month siege before finally surrendering to Parliamentarian forces in 1646. Today, only the striking twin-towered gatehouse remains standing as a protected ruin under the care of English Heritage.
Life threw just about everything at me during its lifespan - two career changes, a new kid, and surviving a bilateral pulmonary embolism and a CVST stroke. But sticking with the geometry and obsessing over retro engine constraints kept me grounded.
Whether you're a history nerd, an old-school mapper, or just a fan of stubborn passion projects, I'd love for the community to give it a run and give feedback on the brushwork or lighting.
