Bale was really on his way up at that point. He's still good now just not as good. My one problem with that movie is the whole "delusional/coming to terms with" genre - the movie itself is quite good, BUT movies like that tend to annoy me.

dude, Social Network matched any of his 90's stuff. But yeah its probably the only one.
 Heh

actually the only one of his 2000's films I haven't seen, but I'm going to watch it soon, it did look good. I liked Zodiac, but it was nowhere near his 90's stuff, especially since he was clearly trying to market it as a semi-sequel to Se7en (ie Fincher returns to serial killer genre, sort of like Scott returns to scifi genre with Prometheus).

Donnie Brasco (1997)
Not bad at all but the Donnie did not feel natural/realistic at all to me.

Drive (2011?)
fantastic for the first half or so but then it gets very fucking disgustingly GOREy. ruined it all for me and my friends. shame.
the style was dangerously close to, the.music was terribly pretentious at times (the human/hero song? geez...). but mostly the style and music and everything was so nice. why the fuck would anyone want to see a head blasted off, a head stomped and cracked and so on. beware.

You really shouldn't watch movies that are not meant for children of your age.

 At Least Check The Rating

if violence etc is not to your liking.
eg Drive is Rated R for strong brutal bloody violence, language and some nudity.

Choosing movies at random, then complaining he doesn't like them. Spirit, choose something that you might like! You had a good run a couple weeks ago, why is it back to this now?

 To Be Honest

I had some similar issues with the movie. I enjoy violence and gore, and not only like, "when it suits the story" etc - but I left the theatre feeling oddly ambivalent about the cinematic experience I'd just gone through.
I have decided that I really like the movie.
However, I will contend that if the violence had been toned down - just a SMIDGEON - it would have been more effective.
*************SPOILER ALERT*************************
for example, the most effective moment of violence for me was when Malcom in the Middle's dad got Albert Brooksed. That was perfect and disturbing.
When that first moment of ultraviolence occurs, with the bursting heads etc, I was laughing a bit.
It does have that effect though of balancing or perhaps veering vertigiously between ridiculous funny 'action movie violence' or something not completely unlike it and deeply disturbing violence that you feel in your stomach.

When I think of the main title song I think of naivete or something more than pretension.
Soundtrack by Cliff Martinez is actually pretty fucking good, I think.
 Classic Movies

Been watching a bunch of classic movies lately, like Breakfast at Tiffany's, which I've been really enjoying. ('Classic' according to Netflix.)
Anyhoo, A Shot in the Dark was really enjoyable. Comedy/mystery starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau. I thought it was actually really funny, it made me laugh quite a few times. It pretty much grabbed me with the opening scene, which I absolutely fucking adore.

Just love it. Ace. Anyhoo, it was a jolly good romp, old boys, wot wot.

that yes, Social Network is Fincher's best post-2000 film (just saw it).
But I still think it's not as good as Fight Club, Seven, The Game, etc. OK, it's better than Alien 3. Yeah, at his best Fincher has an ability to assess and address social themes which is very powerful. This movie does do that. But, I would say that Social Network is as good as Zodiac, and the only reason why it's considered better is that it's more socially relevant, and Reznor's soundtrack is better (though to be fair all he had to do was pick 1 song for every 20 "ghosts" songs - aka undeveloped ideas - he had laying around - heh).
All of that said, the right or wrong the guy who played the Napster inventor was hilarious. If this portrayal of American capitalism (risk-loving paranoid coke-head addicted-to-high-life 19 year olds) is dead on, uhh.... I'm afraid.

I liked it much more than Zodiac because that felt like a retread whereas this felt fresh. And it had ripper dialogue and music comparatively too.

Jane Eyre (new one) - very very good. Nice mood and acting.
Super 8 - kids stuff very cool, monster/action stuff way over the top and from another movie.
Underworld USA - brilliant noir which is a little corny but extremely stylish and dynamically made.

new Jane Eyre was good. My only issue was I think they made the madwoman too sympathetic; I know it's not PC to make crazy people all scary, but in the book, she's all scary.
Looking forward to new Wuthering Heights. This year is going to be one of the best years for movies/tv in a long time: Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, Great Gatsby, the Hobbit, plus the new season of Game of Thrones is so close, and I'm sure the final season of Breaking Bad will be awesome.

Puss in Boots (2011)
Expected mindless animation fun ala Shrek but got some weird ass egg with a creepy face with a super annoying asshole character that ruined everything. First 20 minutes or so were fun.
 BB Season 5
It's a given that it won't be final, I think. AMC ordered 16 final episodes after trying to extort an 8 episodes short season from Gilligan, who rightfully refused. So since they don't have the money for a full 13 eps run, they're going for the best of both worlds, aka two 8 episode seasons.
Of course this means another huge break between the potential seasons 5 and 6, but the idea of Bryan Cranston setting a world record of 6 Emmys gives me the chubs.

It had no gore though, which was nice.
How do you guys pick movies anyways? I had the nicest experiences when I did not know much about a movie beforehand, ie not seen trailers etc. I feel it is the right way to get the proper and intended impression.
For Drive I probably should have checked the director, Valhalla Rising was some weird artsy thing, I would have been more careful. I still think the gore was unnecessary and am still pissed how it completely ruined the movie for me. And listening to the soundtrack over the days I really feel it was too in-your-face with the lyrics.
