When I think of the main title song I think of naivete or something more than pretension.
Soundtrack by Cliff Martinez is actually pretty fucking good, I think.

Been watching a bunch of classic movies lately, like Breakfast at Tiffany's, which I've been really enjoying. ('Classic' according to Netflix.)
Anyhoo, A Shot in the Dark was really enjoyable. Comedy/mystery starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau. I thought it was actually really funny, it made me laugh quite a few times. It pretty much grabbed me with the opening scene, which I absolutely fucking adore.

Just love it. Ace. Anyhoo, it was a jolly good romp, old boys, wot wot.

that yes, Social Network is Fincher's best post-2000 film (just saw it).
But I still think it's not as good as Fight Club, Seven, The Game, etc. OK, it's better than Alien 3. Yeah, at his best Fincher has an ability to assess and address social themes which is very powerful. This movie does do that. But, I would say that Social Network is as good as Zodiac, and the only reason why it's considered better is that it's more socially relevant, and Reznor's soundtrack is better (though to be fair all he had to do was pick 1 song for every 20 "ghosts" songs - aka undeveloped ideas - he had laying around - heh).
All of that said, the right or wrong the guy who played the Napster inventor was hilarious. If this portrayal of American capitalism (risk-loving paranoid coke-head addicted-to-high-life 19 year olds) is dead on, uhh.... I'm afraid.

I liked it much more than Zodiac because that felt like a retread whereas this felt fresh. And it had ripper dialogue and music comparatively too.

Jane Eyre (new one) - very very good. Nice mood and acting.
Super 8 - kids stuff very cool, monster/action stuff way over the top and from another movie.
Underworld USA - brilliant noir which is a little corny but extremely stylish and dynamically made.

starts out nicely, proceeds into stupid script + stupid fantasy elements. :/

new Jane Eyre was good. My only issue was I think they made the madwoman too sympathetic; I know it's not PC to make crazy people all scary, but in the book, she's all scary.
Looking forward to new Wuthering Heights. This year is going to be one of the best years for movies/tv in a long time: Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, Great Gatsby, the Hobbit, plus the new season of Game of Thrones is so close, and I'm sure the final season of Breaking Bad will be awesome.

Puss in Boots (2011)
Expected mindless animation fun ala Shrek but got some weird ass egg with a creepy face with a super annoying asshole character that ruined everything. First 20 minutes or so were fun.
 BB Season 5
It's a given that it won't be final, I think. AMC ordered 16 final episodes after trying to extort an 8 episodes short season from Gilligan, who rightfully refused. So since they don't have the money for a full 13 eps run, they're going for the best of both worlds, aka two 8 episode seasons.
Of course this means another huge break between the potential seasons 5 and 6, but the idea of Bryan Cranston setting a world record of 6 Emmys gives me the chubs.

It had no gore though, which was nice.
How do you guys pick movies anyways? I had the nicest experiences when I did not know much about a movie beforehand, ie not seen trailers etc. I feel it is the right way to get the proper and intended impression.
For Drive I probably should have checked the director, Valhalla Rising was some weird artsy thing, I would have been more careful. I still think the gore was unnecessary and am still pissed how it completely ruined the movie for me. And listening to the soundtrack over the days I really feel it was too in-your-face with the lyrics.

Yeah, it's difficult, it never helps a movie to have everyone telling you that a movie is the best thing ever before you see it (e.g. went to see the artist recently, and while I enjoyed it, I did also spend most of the movie thinking the main character needed a big slap). But if you know nothing about the movie before you see it, I guess you end up seeing an awful lot of drivel...

i think it helped that i downloaded the soundtrack as soon as it came out (not intentionally, i was looking for something else and thought why not) and got to know and like a couple of the songs at least a month or so before seeing the movie. after that it was great hearing them in context
i'd heard it was gory too; and while it was pretty extreme in places it was only so in very short bursts (ie. if you turn your head for one second at those times you'll probably miss it) which stopped it from feeling gratuitous or gross-out. i can't say how well it would have worked for me without those moments; i think they benefitted the scary/foreboding feel well
i can pretty comfortably call it my favourite film of 2011, although there are still a few key ones i haven't seen yet (hugo being one of them, hoping to catch that soon)
 Hugo Cabret

Meh. Well, I mean it wasn't bad, but I didn't expect Martin Scorsese to make a children's movie. I went to watch it, because it's said to have such stunning 3D effects - didn't James Cameron claim they were better than Avatar? At any rate, I wasn't that impressed with them, often they seemed unnecessarily blurry. Could be because it was on a farily small screen, but I doubt it. Doesn't make me hyped to watch more 3D movies, especially considering how outrageously expensive they are.
Well suited for Spirit. No gore; may contain remotely sad or emotional scenes, though, so be warned!!!

yeah, that movie looked super emo so I won't bother.

Speaking of Scorsese I watched Casino again recently. Much better than I remember - quite a good film. Although there was a little too much focus on Sharon Stone's grotty character.
Also watched Brooklyn's Finest the other day, not Scorsese but same sort of films he makes. It was pretty good too, though not as epic as it could have been. Go in with no expectations and it's enjoyable.

My wife's work has a disaster movie night every so often and I went along for this one (it was released as "tidal wave" in English). It's a very very odd movie -- first Korean movie I've seen, but I assume they're not all like this?
The bit where the container ship explodes and fires containers into skyscrapers from across the bay was particularly genius.

not sure what screen you saw it on, but IMHO it was hands down the best use of 3d to date. Although maybe I'm biased because I also thought it was one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I watched a good movie! SleepwalkR!
The Untouchables (1987)
About catching Al Capone in the 1920s. Music was annoying at times as it has not aged too well. Great cast and everything. Baby scene was a bit too annoying imo. Overall a very thrilling nice movie!
 Yeah
That's a good movie.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008): Absolutely great. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Adventures of Tintin: Loved it. Like Indiana Jones (the good ones) on steroids. Personally thought it was hilarious, the action was great, kept a great pace.
Super 8: Also really good. Also kept a great pace. Pretty good if you like 80s feeling adventure movies, similar to the Goonies but a lot funner.

me right out of Super 8, IMHO it felt like it was from another movie, way over the top.
