Film Thread.
I thought a trio of themed threads about other entertainment media might be good. If you're not interested, please just ignore the thread and pick some threads that interest you from here: http://celephais.net/board/view_all_threads.php

Anyway, discuss films...

"S.T.A.L.K.E.R" - The "movie"?
I Mean Here, For Biff
There Already Was A STALKER Movie...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/

And it's really good, if you like slow, thoughtful, Tarkovsky-paced movies.
Yeah Its Cool
the imagery is unbelievable. And all real.
The Cabin In The Woods.
Not quite worth the mega-rating it gets on Rotten Tomatoes, but a good fun sort of sci-fi thriller with escalating excitement and plenty of LOL moments. The main thing worth knowing is that despite the ominious poster, the catch/hook of this initially-horror-orientated film is nothing weird, freaky, or downright surreal - it's a straight up different rationale for the horror scenario that pans out to be a jolly good romp (albeit with an abrupt ending and an underdeveloped backstory which is a pity as the premise has lots of potential), rather than a horror headfuck. Favourite moments: the entrance of Marty (proper lol if you've seen Dollhouse), and the lift doors moment :).
Treme Season 1
halfway through, absolutely loving it. David Simon is a special man.

based on the trailer i'd completely written cabin in the woods off as the most generic looking horror movie ever made, so quite pleasantly surprised to see such high scores on IMDB/RT. can't imagine i'll catch it before the dvd comes out though

avengers:
shit

The Punisher (2004 or 2005)
Could have done with less gory details at times but overall it was very cool. A gazillion times better than Drive which for some reason I feel like comparing it to. Hlarious, brutal, manly and clichee. I liked the style.

The Guard (2011)
Really good. I highly recommended it. Calm and thrilling in a feel good mood. Great soundtrack. Expected some silly comedy but this was quite deep and symbolic.
The Guard
I really did not like this at all, In Bruges was much better IMHO.
Fucked Movies
Suspiria - this movie is fucked. "Secret Flowers" indeed. The visual style is so unusual, bright colours and odd camera angles, and really eccentric set designs, unless there are actual buildings in Italy that look like this. The soundtrack is creepy as hell. Even at the end you aren't exactly sure what's going on, but I think you could call this a horror classic; it has a ton of atmosphere in any case, and it was made before The Shining (possibly influenced it?).

Heathers - Really mean-spirited comedy that has gained some disturbing implications post-Columbine; some people might be disturbed or offended (and were at the time, the late 80's), but I found it really funny despite being totally ridiculous; the scene where the priest says "Eskimo" was so out there. Apparently the ending was going to be even more ridiculous and dark but the studio forced a somewhat reconciliatory ending onto this otherwise increasingly bizarre and cynical script.

Ginger Snaps - Amusing cheesy b-horror movie about a girl who turns into a werewolf.

To be honest I found some of Dario Argento's horrors to be a bit overated. Maybe I need to watch them a second time. And I think i've only seen 2 or 3 (Suspiria included). But I got a bit of a Euro trash kind of feeling with them, they were a little bit weird but not it an interesting way. Suspiria reminded me a bit of Santa Sangre I think it was.

Any of you guys watched Alejandro Jodorowsky's movies? El Topo is a 10/10. Extremely weird but brilliant.
Black Death
Black Death (2010)
I heard this was one of the best horrors of 2010. Had a good cast, led by Sean Bean and some weird monk dude, but both were pretty good. It was set during the times of the plague, and interesting set during daytime all through the movie. You don't get that often in horror!

Anyway I felt it dragged on a bit in the second half and didn't really go anywhere - perhaps they ran out of money. The killing of certain characters was a surprise. The ending was completely unnecessary though.

Definitely a horror director to keep an eye on. His first horror (Creep) was fucking terrible, but Triangle was really good and so is Black Death, so onwards and upwards :D
Tronyn
Yeah Suspiria works on atmosphere alone because there's not much else going on. Give Inferno and Deep Red a go too, same style.
Best Thing About Suspiria
was the soundtrack by Goblin. They did a bunch of scores for Argento and most of them are pretty rad.
Avengers
I wouldnt call it shit like Starbuck did but pretty meh. The individual Marvel movies were better (havent seen Thor yet though).

Thor is absolutely rubbish, trust me.

People praise Avengers everywhere, could you guys elaborate what you disliked?
Yeah But Our Tastes Arent The Same
so I will give it a go.

As for Avengers, until they get together, the movie is all over the place and doesnt really know what to do. When they get together, theres some decent banter between them until it leads to some totally predictable and cringeworthy in-fighting. The last 1/3 delivers the carnage but I stopped caring by then, despite some really cool action.

This board is always the dissenting opinion on stuff for whatever reason. EVERYONE I know who saw the movie absolutely loved it. *shrug*
Good For Them

I Haven't Seen It.
But I have seen Thor, and Iron Man 2, and if I was a film graduate, then my opinions of them would be that 'They sucked balls'. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed them, but they are very very cheasy OTT films. And I'm sure TAA is just the same. Cheesy as hell. Lets be honest.

But hey - everybody loves super cheesy, super super OTT films. About Superman. Except for people who have actually seen a real film, with real acting in it.

The Shrine

Brilliant! Starts off a bit unsure of itself, but turns into a masterpiece by the end of the film. Excellent. If you like horror films, watch this.

A Horrible Way To Die

Glad I percevered with this film, turned out to be quality too.

Tyrannosaur

Excellent characters and acting throughout. Different.

Area 407

Yeah - this was good too.

nitin

OK ... well, good for you too I guess? It's just opinions and data points we're throwing around here.
Sorry
Except for people who have actually seen a real film, with real acting in it.

...is inflammatory. And dumb.

I just mean that sometimes OTT cheesy action flicks get on my nerves.
Willem
You do not always have to have the last word, you know?

I watched Crazy Stupid Love the other day and really liked it.
The Avengers
Haven't seen it yet, but since it's a Joss Whedon film, I can't imagine it to be totally shit. Also, I'm actually going to the cinema to watch it - first time in a year I think.
