Anyway, discuss films...

The Punisher (2004 or 2005)
Could have done with less gory details at times but overall it was very cool. A gazillion times better than Drive which for some reason I feel like comparing it to. Hlarious, brutal, manly and clichee. I liked the style.

The Guard (2011)
Really good. I highly recommended it. Calm and thrilling in a feel good mood. Great soundtrack. Expected some silly comedy but this was quite deep and symbolic.
The Guard
I really did not like this at all, In Bruges was much better IMHO.
Fucked Movies
Suspiria - this movie is fucked. "Secret Flowers" indeed. The visual style is so unusual, bright colours and odd camera angles, and really eccentric set designs, unless there are actual buildings in Italy that look like this. The soundtrack is creepy as hell. Even at the end you aren't exactly sure what's going on, but I think you could call this a horror classic; it has a ton of atmosphere in any case, and it was made before The Shining (possibly influenced it?).

Heathers - Really mean-spirited comedy that has gained some disturbing implications post-Columbine; some people might be disturbed or offended (and were at the time, the late 80's), but I found it really funny despite being totally ridiculous; the scene where the priest says "Eskimo" was so out there. Apparently the ending was going to be even more ridiculous and dark but the studio forced a somewhat reconciliatory ending onto this otherwise increasingly bizarre and cynical script.

Ginger Snaps - Amusing cheesy b-horror movie about a girl who turns into a werewolf.

To be honest I found some of Dario Argento's horrors to be a bit overated. Maybe I need to watch them a second time. And I think i've only seen 2 or 3 (Suspiria included). But I got a bit of a Euro trash kind of feeling with them, they were a little bit weird but not it an interesting way. Suspiria reminded me a bit of Santa Sangre I think it was.

Any of you guys watched Alejandro Jodorowsky's movies? El Topo is a 10/10. Extremely weird but brilliant.
Black Death
Black Death (2010)
I heard this was one of the best horrors of 2010. Had a good cast, led by Sean Bean and some weird monk dude, but both were pretty good. It was set during the times of the plague, and interesting set during daytime all through the movie. You don't get that often in horror!

Anyway I felt it dragged on a bit in the second half and didn't really go anywhere - perhaps they ran out of money. The killing of certain characters was a surprise. The ending was completely unnecessary though.

Definitely a horror director to keep an eye on. His first horror (Creep) was fucking terrible, but Triangle was really good and so is Black Death, so onwards and upwards :D
Tronyn
Yeah Suspiria works on atmosphere alone because there's not much else going on. Give Inferno and Deep Red a go too, same style.
Best Thing About Suspiria
was the soundtrack by Goblin. They did a bunch of scores for Argento and most of them are pretty rad.
Avengers
I wouldnt call it shit like Starbuck did but pretty meh. The individual Marvel movies were better (havent seen Thor yet though).

Thor is absolutely rubbish, trust me.

People praise Avengers everywhere, could you guys elaborate what you disliked?
Yeah But Our Tastes Arent The Same
so I will give it a go.

As for Avengers, until they get together, the movie is all over the place and doesnt really know what to do. When they get together, theres some decent banter between them until it leads to some totally predictable and cringeworthy in-fighting. The last 1/3 delivers the carnage but I stopped caring by then, despite some really cool action.

This board is always the dissenting opinion on stuff for whatever reason. EVERYONE I know who saw the movie absolutely loved it. *shrug*
Good For Them

I Haven't Seen It.
But I have seen Thor, and Iron Man 2, and if I was a film graduate, then my opinions of them would be that 'They sucked balls'. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed them, but they are very very cheasy OTT films. And I'm sure TAA is just the same. Cheesy as hell. Lets be honest.

But hey - everybody loves super cheesy, super super OTT films. About Superman. Except for people who have actually seen a real film, with real acting in it.

The Shrine

Brilliant! Starts off a bit unsure of itself, but turns into a masterpiece by the end of the film. Excellent. If you like horror films, watch this.

A Horrible Way To Die

Glad I percevered with this film, turned out to be quality too.

Tyrannosaur

Excellent characters and acting throughout. Different.

Area 407

Yeah - this was good too.

nitin

OK ... well, good for you too I guess? It's just opinions and data points we're throwing around here.
Sorry
Except for people who have actually seen a real film, with real acting in it.

...is inflammatory. And dumb.

I just mean that sometimes OTT cheesy action flicks get on my nerves.
Willem
You do not always have to have the last word, you know?

I watched Crazy Stupid Love the other day and really liked it.
The Avengers
Haven't seen it yet, but since it's a Joss Whedon film, I can't imagine it to be totally shit. Also, I'm actually going to the cinema to watch it - first time in a year I think.
Avengers
I've read a few reviews that were super unimpressed, ones from writers who's opinions - if dissenting, generally - have matched up very well with mine regarding previous superhero films. Nonetheless, I want to see it. I am in the mood for dumb random fluff, one liners, OTT, etc. I suppose if any OTT superhero flick is worth seeing in theatre it might be this one.

Bryan Singer's Superman was a huge bummer for me, btw. Trying to do some kind of adult superhero shit in a way that doesn't work. Batman reboot sure - even that is fucking cheesy as shit underneath the dark veneer though. Plus he's always bothered me - kryptonite bla bla bla, and otherwise he just has to like manage time well. At least in the old ones he does so in a way which makes ABSOLUTELY no sense at all and its fun and awesome.

Crazy Stupid Love - yeah I thought this was good as well, despite being SUPER predictable. I will never get tired of Carell. And against all odds, I really like Seacrest. And most of the cast actually.
Not the kid though. ugh. In fact - his story thread has some fairly fucked up gender-politics type stuff in there - which inflected other parts of the film and made itsomewhat disturbing as a whole for me.
Being a horror fan I've obviously seen worse, or at least more sensational, or more blatant.

I AM LOVE: Melodrama done right. SO fucking stylish.
Monsieur Lazhar - another great one that hit me way harder than I expected! A local film ( I think shot here...) worth seeing and actually worth the attention being paid to it. Despite, again, some perhaps prerequisite Oscar cheez.
By Seacrest I Meant Gosling
Obviously.
Willem
That was my point yes. Just because everyone you know loved it doesn't mean I and everyone else has to too and can't express a different view. More people than not also love Avatar, Titanic and Two and a Half Men.

Ricky, iron man 1 and captain America are decent examples of well done OTT cheese from the same universe.
Avengers
Is stupid and cheesy yes, but I enjoyed it. It avoided taking itself too seriously and has some moments that actually made me laugh out loud, so I'm going to be happy and not think about it too hard.

So what would you prefer to pay to see in 3D at the movies... a big OTT cheesy action flick full of awesome action sequences and superheros... or a slow, art house european drama with no cgi or action at all... but it's got a story.

Hollywood wants to make it's money from movie tickets, so it's not going to waste it's time having a script written by Woody Allen. Teens and 20yo's don't give a shit about character depth, dialogue and meaningful storyline.

And your right Drew, even the Dark Knight movies are cheesy a little as well. It's a superhero flick, and with Avengers it's a fuckin overdose of superheroes, so it was always going to be an extreme action and cgi extravaganza.

I enjoyed it anyway, it was probably better than I expected.

At least Black Widow's struggles with her past and, actually, having her as one of the leading characters in the film was all good. I really like Scarlett she's such a hunny. And some of the characters weren't quite as b&w in good vs evil... Hawkeye switched sides (though not of his own doing), Loki was the stereotypical Hollywood bad guy, and the superheroes even had a bit of in-fighting.
Thor and Captain America really suck though. Thor was completely useless in the film, while using more of a comedy actor like Chris Evans to play a completely stiff Capt America was a terrible choice.

Ironman/Downey was really good, though I tire of Downey playing the same character in every movie. I don't like him much, or the Ironman character - he should have been easily killed so many times - but someone needed to carry some humour.

Shame we had to see so much Sam L Jackson... he's so overrated with the same fucking character he's done in every movie since Pulp Fiction. And WTF was that jump out of the helicopter at the start? Since when did he develop superpowers?

Same with Black Widow and Hawkeye - some of their action sequences were too OTT considering they're just normal people.

My main gripe though was the way Hulk suddenly decided he's no longer an out of control beast wrecking everything in his path, and instead now has allies. Since when is he able to "think"?

I mean Loki WASN'T the stereotypical arch villain. Thank god the leader of the aliens didn't make more than 5mins appearance, because he was cheesy as hell.
Err
kona why do you have to watch 3D at the cinemas?

And I assume I'm not the only one who does watch drasma movies at the cinema along with the action stuff.
Ricky, Don't Take It Back
But hey - everybody loves super cheesy, super super OTT films. About Superman. Except for people who have actually seen a real film, with real acting in it.

is actually pretty funny! :)

Even Life in a Day (2011) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1687247/ was ultimately "nice try, but fuck off you fucking piece of shit hollywood style direction/editing" for me. I simply don't get how people are so easily able to not see through all the hollywood shite that's fed to them. "Oh, so there just was some sad stuff, naturally they show something to cheer me up now." Fuck this, I'm not a 9-year old, I actualy want to reflect on things. If it's sad, so be it, I can live with that. The "Oh, it was all just fun, disregard!"-rollercoaster you're always thrown in after something like this is so obvious.

I stopped half-way through Babyface (1933), should I continue?
