MI:4, didnt like it as much as the third one because the start and end were a bit average and it also lacked Hoffman's memorable villain.

But that entire Dubai sequence of 40-50 min was brilliant and more thrilling than most recent action movies put together.

Watched it, think I enjoyed it, can remember very little about it at all... which must say something, right? 

Fairly good entertainment but obviously not as good as it should have been - it could have been great if the content had matched up to the style. It's all rather dark and dramatic and has pretty cool fantasy setting, but lacks depth and a strong background - the style reminded me a lot of BB / TDK, but while they had some sensible mythology to support and enhance it, this film doesn't, which is a pity because what is hinted on (especially Ravenna and her effect on the land) could be quite intriguing. 

watched only the first season so far, but was impressed. it avoided melodrama, and the one major death (no spoilers) was totally unexpected to me. noted a few actors from the wire kicking ass, and also there were a couple wire-ish moments (one was a serious ass-kicking in an empty house), but generally it's totally different, though still about a community and the interactions that go on between all the different elements. I hope David Simon makes a show every year for the next 50.

In addition to Wendell Pierce (who's awesome, though his character is written a bit too predictably comedic), the guy who played Pearson in the Wire (possibly the top star), Kim Dickens (loved her in Deadwood, also great in this) it also has John Goodman, who I've liked in every role I've seen him in. 

the only thing I havent cared so far is Annie and her boyfriend but looks like s2 might fix that. 

get on to Generation Kill too.

Oh real Spirit? From animated classics Finding Nemo and Wall-E... that's a shame that particular directors' belly flopped on his first live action.

Does anyone watch Once Upon A Time? I quite like it. Robert Carlyle is such a good method actor, he needs more movie parts.

Highly disjointed. A prequel should have had some answers to the origin of the said species, instead Prometheus goes for a half-assed attempt to tackle on genesis theories than does not come up with any meaningful explanation. The opening scenes promises an epic to return to thought-provoking and slow-moving sci-fi of the seventies (coupled with breathtaking visuals), but all hope dies as you witness the cringe-worthy dialogue and hollow, emotionless scenes played out by a terrible cast (save one).

Too many plot holes, illogical motives, laughable characterization. It doesn't add anything worthy to the saga and it doesn't do well as a standalone movie. Too many ideas stacked into two hours. My best bet is that it was butchered in the studio and a Director's Cut may do it justice. Alas, as it is in the case of Alien 3 and its Assembly Cut, the deleted scenes won't turn the movie into an epic as the script is badly-written to begin with (its like two parallel movies in one), but it may become more tolerable than the Theatrical version.

After seeing this, I don't have high hopes for the upcoming Blade Runner prequel which is also a brainchild of Ridley Scott. 

so I doubt theres another better cut out there.

Btw, for those into slow burn arthouse fare, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is a must see. 

Ridley Scott's legendary reputation seems to be based on his first 3 films, and everything else he's done has been "good" at best, I was kind of hoping he could do something groundbreaking again with Prometheus. 

It's still worth-seeing but it could (and should) have been much better. Set design, effects, camera-work and the use of 3D are top-notch. I believe Ridley does his part wonderfully in these respects. The fault lies within the script - that's mostly likely because the original, straight-up prequel story is highly revised later by 'that guy' who is most famous for his work on Lost series. There's barely any depth for characters, no background on their personalities and no motives explained for their actions - there isn't a single (human) being likeable or understandable. Besides, I don't think small gibberish talk and streetwise types are fit for scientists.

If you want a decent prequel that is lovingly made and pays the source work a commendable homage, as well as adding decently to what's established, ignore the low ratings and watch 2011's 'The Thing'. It's a great companion piece to Carpenter's '82 one.

His first 3? The Duellist, Alien, Bladerunner? Never heard of the Duellist.

Well he does have some overrated movies in his arsenal... Thelma & Louise, 1942, GI Jane. In fact looking at his movies, there isn't that much above 'good'.

Can't remember Matchstick Men at all, so I assuming I didn't think much of it.

Ridley may be a legend, but I suppose Nolan (and I'm definitely not a Nolan fanboy) already has 6 greats out of 7 movies (Following was the only non-great movie). Soon to add another with the next Batman movie. 

Hannibal, I think, is actually underrated. Gladiator, overrated, haven't seen Black Hawk Down, American Gangster I'd say was only good, nothing standout, and Body of Lies looked alright but not interesting enough to watch. He needs to stop working with Russell Crowe, or Russell Crowe needs to get some of his old talent (ie The Insider) back.

Alien and Blade Runner are such genius, but the more I think about it, the more the real genius is really just set design in both films, putting you the viewer in that place. Alien in particular has a pretty minimal story, while all the cool ideas in Blade Runner come from Phillip K Dick. One might even argue that the neat ideas in Alien come from Giger and through him from Lovecraft. Whereas Nolan excels at scripts and ideas; he certainly has his faults but so far I've really liked all his films except Insomnia which was alright. "Following" is a gem and Memento is genius. I've never been interested in James Bond but if Nolan makes a James Bond movie (or a romantic comedy, lol) I'm there. 

Nolan doing Bond? Fuck I hope not, Bond is just popcorn over the top action. Although the last couple films with Daniel Craig has been better than the Pierce Brosnan crap.

Yeah Tronyn, you're right on that one - Alien and Bladerunner were all about the atmosphere and setting.

And yeah Ridley definitely needs to stop using Russell Crowe. Crowe I really liked in American Gangster because he wasn't the lead. And he was a flawed character. But he kind of annoys me too much for lead roles. 

has always been about atmosphere and setting, his better films just have a decent script in addition. Nothing to do with Russell Crowe.

Also, a lot of people have only seen the theatrical and rightly hated it, but the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven is excellent.

And The Duellists is awesome!

Why do movies have to be made for stupid people. Seems like it wouldn't have required so much work on the script to turn it into a nice sci-fi film, just replace the bullshit with a bit of subtlety, and fix the nonsensical science.
