Film Thread.
I thought a trio of themed threads about other entertainment media might be good. If you're not interested, please just ignore the thread and pick some threads that interest you from here: http://celephais.net/board/view_all_threads.php

Anyway, discuss films...

I Enjoyed Spiderman 2
as much as any of the Nolan Batmans.
Yeah
I wouldn't go as far as you Nitin - it doesn't reach that level IMO - but I think #2 is great. Also I don't want every superhero movie to be 'dark' - the campiness of the film is a part of its enjoyment for me, though its a fine balance (venom jazz).
Nitin, Yes
Spiderman 3 was pants

Hodejegerne ("Headhunters") (2011)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989

Very nice thrilling thriller. Some really violent bits but they did kinda feel in place, some gore that was disgusting but was the same. Highly recommended! If you like a dark thriller, do not even read the imdb snippet but watch this. Has some completely ridiculous technological things though.

Oh and I would recommend watching the original with subs, at least the German dub had one very bad voice actor.
Yeah Really Wanna See That.

Pacific Rim

Can everybody please go see that film when it comes out so Del Toro can make At The Mountains Of Madness later
Im In.

Me Too

Some Mor Recent Viewings
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Fibncher remake) - decent film, probably on the same level of quality as the swedish original but with its own strengths and weaknesses. Better pacing, better visuals, amazig score. On the downside, the swedish version had a better relationship between Mikael and Lisbeth and a better version of the crucial photo scene. Both versions suffer from some shoddy plotting though but that comes from the source.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - brilliant. Everything, the acting, the music, the look, the scripting is utterly brilliant. yes its slow, yes there are no female characters, yes its complicated, but this is a real film from a real filmmaker.

Pale Flower - Lots has been written about the French New Wave from the 60's . But the Japanese new wave from the same time produced equally as imrpessive films. This part yakuza/part noir/part political allegory is one of the best, the look and score are to die for and the long, detailed gamblign den sequences are hypnotic to watch.

Letter Never Sent - Russian movie from 1960 about 4 explorers tryign to find diamonds in the Taiga and running into and trying to escape from a massive firestorm. I have no idea how this was filmed because the long, elaborate, tracking shots look like they, and the actors, go through very real fires. The visuals make it worth watching but on the whole, its a little lightweight to be anything more than decent.
Audition By Takashi Miike
made me fall asleep nearly, but then...
Tickle Tickle..

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
The original is better. Because Noomi Rapace is teh hotness. That is all.

Brazil (Criterion edition which is the DC I believe)

Ugh, surreal symbolism. It started really great but lost me fairly quickly. The two main characters were unconvincing to me. Nice setting and stuff everywhere and pipes though. Can't say I would ever recommend it or watch it again.
Brazil Is Awesome

Also
Insidious - dumb, unoriginal, poorly shot and not even remotely scary. How does this stuff pass for horror or even thriller these days?

Insidious... is that the one where the dad goes into the other realm at the end to save the son? That was pretty cool, but overall just an average horror.

Audition is well overrated. I found it a bit boring.

Brazil had awesome atmosphere and setting, but I don't know... not quite the cult classic I was expecting. The film quality seemed too poor? It's going back a while since I saw it though.
Yes That Is The One
god that was dumb.

I will take Audition anyday.
Total Recall
I think my main impression after watching the remake was "it's still a cool story, but this isn't a particularly good telling of it". Must watch the original again (and re-read the story).
Dredd
Watched this on the plane, so eh. Quite liked the ambiguity. The ending seemed anti-climatic.
Total Recall
It looked awesome. The film sets were really well done. I don't buy Colin Ferrel as an action hero. He's no Arnie or Stallone. Take away the brooms above his eyes and he's nothing.

But I just went in expecting a new version, a reboot loosely based on ideas of the original, but not a successful remake. That way I enjoyed it. Pretend the original didn't exist, and this would be a very popular movie.

But it wasn't the original... doesn't come
close.

Not having Mars, what the hell?

Kate Beckinsale completely sucked as well. I like her, but not in the role of the action movie antagonist. No friggin way. Especially looking like she just stepped out of a beauty commercial all through the movie.
Get Your Ass
get your ass
get your ass
TOO MARS!!!!

"Pretend the original didn't exist,"

easier said than done when you go out of your way to include scenes that remind you of the original (three boob girl is one example). If you want your movie to be treated like a different adaptation of the same source, fine, dont then wink wink repeatedly to an earlier version just to cash in.
Total Recall
Good sci-fi action romp. Some cool action scenes (car chase) and stylish city-scapes. Story was spoilt by being the same as TR, obviously, and the big tube thing wasn't as well used as it could be, but slick and spectacular enough to be good entertainment.
