Film Thread.
I thought a trio of themed threads about other entertainment media might be good. If you're not interested, please just ignore the thread and pick some threads that interest you from here: http://celephais.net/board/view_all_threads.php

Anyway, discuss films...

Nitin.
Also because it is either small simple objects against a detailed background, or large detailed objects against the plain background of space. Either way is much easier for the brain to cope with compared to 3D fancy objects against 3D fancy backgrounds.

Which scene didn't you like BTW?? There were a few that didn't grab me as much but usually very swiftly redeemed as the film went on. I know there were scientific implausibilities but that's not something I could bring myself to give a shit about.
Shambler
yeah but Life of Pi and Hugo dont have simple backgrounds or simple objects, but still use 3D very well.

The scene I didnt like had nothing to do with whether it was realistic etc but just felt tonally wrong to me. It's the scene about 2/3 of the way through between Clooney and Bullock.
Nitin
Yes I see what you mean. But for me oxygen deprivation + epiphany = different tone to her experience at that time.

Still we are all agreed it is a bloody great film. Definitely left an impression on me with the atmosphere :)
Yeah I Thought Pacific Rim Sucked. Too OTT And Brainless.
I liked Man of Steel though, it had many of the same sort of pitfalls, but it was gritty enough for it not to just seem saturated in nonsense production flamboyance. Even though it was.

The Last Days on Mars was good IMO. Simple, fairly predictable but very watchable once you start to get into it. The characters were quite good, you feel that they are doomed from the start but they seem suitably oblivious.
Lol
what about the last hour of Man of Steel, was that not too OTT and brainless?

Havent seen Pacific rim yet, was hoping to snag the blu ray for cheap around US sale time/Black Friday.
Shambler
to be fair, on my 2nd viewing, it bothered me less the second time but I still think it could have been pulled off better.
It Was, But The Exosuits Were Kind Of Cool
And the actor that played the main henchman is so ugly, it felt gritty lol
I Guess The Previous Superman Re-boot
(or whatever it was supposed to be) set the bar so low, anything would have seemed better...
Yeah
except I kind of liked that one :) I know that I'm probably 1 out of 10 people worldwide that did.
Nitin, For A Film Buff
I worry about you XD xx
Dark Skies
Despite using some horror movie cliches (the little kid won't turn around etc), I found this really disturbing. But then again, for just sheer gut reaction fear, it's hard to beat the gray aliens, as in previous movies like "Fire in the Sky" and "Altered." The gray aliens are so much more disturbing than ghosts or demons, although this is really just a modern horror movie like "Mama" or "Sinister" with aliens instead of a ghost or demon. I'd been reading about the "Hill case" recently and there were parts of this I could barely even watch lol. J. K. Simmons doesn't show up until almost an hour in but he's pretty awesome as the conspiracy theorist guy and the rest of the cast was pretty good. I hope I never get abducted by aliens.
/me
gets the anal probes out

I enjoyed the first Superman reboot too nitin, so you're not the only one. Sure Lex was way too cheesy, Lois was a bit of a bitch, but Superman himself was fine, and the situation with him nearly dying was touching. It wasn't quite as bad as everyone made out. But I'm biased because I love all comic movies.

Haven't seen the new Superman yet, but I'm not believing the bad reviews, I'm sure I'll like it.

Man of steel sucks just like Thor. What a total waste of time. Zero thrill, constant DRAMATIC MUSIC AND EXPLOSIONS, shallow characters, braindead "story".
Don't See The Difference

I disagree. Man of Steel is exactly the kind of incoherent movie I expected Pacific Rim to be. The review of lyre on http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/reviews lists a good amount of those cringe worthy scenes.
Some Stuff I've Seen
Iron Man 3 - good enough diversion, awesome action scenes but like all the Marvel movies apart from maybe Iron Man 1 and Captain America, it lacks soul.

Party Down Season 1 - bit hit and miss mockumentary type comedy series but when its funny, its hilarious!

The Misfits Season 1 - Love it, the humour is right up my alley and the drama works well too.

Sons of Anarchy Season 1 - I dont get the appeal of this, will probably give another season a try before totally writing it off but came across as a much dumber Sopranos to me. Actually, the show is just dumb in terms of plotting and character motivations full stop.

Baby the Rain must Fall (1965) - From what I have read this was a critical and commercial failure but almost every review I have read spends more time discussing the fact that Steve McQueen does not actually sing in a few scenes of the movie, rather than rest of the movie itself. Anyway I thought this was an excellent film, evoking small town Americana very effectively and also doing a commendable job of hsowing a tortured soul whose life is invariably under the shadow of his abused past. Lee Remick as McQueen's wife is outstanding.

Hustle (1975) - Another one that seems to have been a critical and commercial failure and while its nothing new crime drama wise, I thought the characterisations were fascinating, and the look and feel were also excellent pulled off. One of the few good Burt Reynolds films I have seen.

Beyond the Hills (2012) - easily the best movie I have seen this year, Cristian Mungiu's followup to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is even better. Warning : Heartbreaking and Devastating and slow.
I Liked Misfits As Well

Also
Predators - utter shit.
Also.
Misfits - very cool stuff. I have a weird chav-crush on Kelly, mostly because of her swearing.

Predators - utter shit.
I Was Pretty Fucking Disappointed By Predators
could have been a perfectly good slab of classic macho 80s style action bullshit.
Well...
They got the bullshit bit right at least.
There Was Not One Decent Action Scene
and clearly no one wrote a script.

its better than the last couple predator movies though.
Yeah But
that's a)not a hard task and b)hardly some sort of good threshold.
