Film Thread.
I thought a trio of themed threads about other entertainment media might be good. If you're not interested, please just ignore the thread and pick some threads that interest you from here: http://celephais.net/board/view_all_threads.php

Anyway, discuss films...

I enjoyed the first Superman reboot too nitin, so you're not the only one. Sure Lex was way too cheesy, Lois was a bit of a bitch, but Superman himself was fine, and the situation with him nearly dying was touching. It wasn't quite as bad as everyone made out. But I'm biased because I love all comic movies.

Haven't seen the new Superman yet, but I'm not believing the bad reviews, I'm sure I'll like it.

Man of steel sucks just like Thor. What a total waste of time. Zero thrill, constant DRAMATIC MUSIC AND EXPLOSIONS, shallow characters, braindead "story".
Don't See The Difference
Pacific Rim sucks just like Thor. What a total waste of time. Zero thrill, constant DRAMATIC MUSIC AND EXPLOSIONS, shallow characters, braindead "story".

I disagree. Man of Steel is exactly the kind of incoherent movie I expected Pacific Rim to be. The review of lyre on http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/reviews lists a good amount of those cringe worthy scenes.
Some Stuff I've Seen
Iron Man 3 - good enough diversion, awesome action scenes but like all the Marvel movies apart from maybe Iron Man 1 and Captain America, it lacks soul.

Party Down Season 1 - bit hit and miss mockumentary type comedy series but when its funny, its hilarious!

The Misfits Season 1 - Love it, the humour is right up my alley and the drama works well too.

Sons of Anarchy Season 1 - I dont get the appeal of this, will probably give another season a try before totally writing it off but came across as a much dumber Sopranos to me. Actually, the show is just dumb in terms of plotting and character motivations full stop.

Baby the Rain must Fall (1965) - From what I have read this was a critical and commercial failure but almost every review I have read spends more time discussing the fact that Steve McQueen does not actually sing in a few scenes of the movie, rather than rest of the movie itself. Anyway I thought this was an excellent film, evoking small town Americana very effectively and also doing a commendable job of hsowing a tortured soul whose life is invariably under the shadow of his abused past. Lee Remick as McQueen's wife is outstanding.

Hustle (1975) - Another one that seems to have been a critical and commercial failure and while its nothing new crime drama wise, I thought the characterisations were fascinating, and the look and feel were also excellent pulled off. One of the few good Burt Reynolds films I have seen.

Beyond the Hills (2012) - easily the best movie I have seen this year, Cristian Mungiu's followup to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is even better. Warning : Heartbreaking and Devastating and slow.
I Liked Misfits As Well

Also
Predators - utter shit.
Also.
Misfits - very cool stuff. I have a weird chav-crush on Kelly, mostly because of her swearing.

Predators - utter shit.
I Was Pretty Fucking Disappointed By Predators
could have been a perfectly good slab of classic macho 80s style action bullshit.
Well...
They got the bullshit bit right at least.
There Was Not One Decent Action Scene
and clearly no one wrote a script.

its better than the last couple predator movies though.
Yeah But
that's a)not a hard task and b)hardly some sort of good threshold.

All these action remakes such as Predators need to have a long hard look at Dredd.
Yeah,
To learn how to make a remake dull, rather than just cheesy.

Tosser. You are dull :D
Gravity
- bit too much heavy breathing
- ending a bit drawn out
- got a bit sappy at the 'if you meet a girl with knots in her hair...' part (can't remember the exact wording)

otherwise awesome. tense and very original, definite benchmark film for breathtaking effects (seriously, those debris collisions!)

and i liked the scene that bothered nitin. it didn't seem right at the time but everything clicked afterwards

World War Z: Great beginning but shallow illogical shit from then on.

Red 2: As good as the first one. Yay!
The Golden Compass
The trailer for 7th Son looked pretty badass (yes yes I know) so I was in the mood for some magic type fighting movie.

witches, pirates, scientists, whiskey-drinking talking polar bears, and cowboys, join forces to battle the Catholic Church and their shock troops, Nazis and Eskimo warriors. Lol.... Almost seems like a caricature of fantasy and the ideas to be found there. I found the weird ideas and the portrayal of the church as this giant parasitic, nefarious organization bent on stomping out free thought and the imagination, quite amusing.
Hahah

But
Who watches the watcher doing the watching?

Crime Story
www.imdb.com/title/tt0108656/

Serious Jackie Chan thriller which is really nice until the last ~1/4 where everything explodes.
The Golden Compass
Oh man, that was pretty bad iirc. I liked the books though.
Hobbit 2
Lot's of stuff to nitpick about, but I wasn't bored for a sec.
Also lots of mapping inspiration!
The Adjustment Bureau
I actually watched a movie ON TV! For the first time in must be 5 years. Pretty good, got the impression about 20 minutes before the end that they didn't know how to end it, only to find at the end that they didn't know how to end it. I was hoping that Elise was some kind of counter-plan revolutionary for a while...
