@mukor
Understand, but occasionally I see confusion and miscommunication in the threads. Shit, I've gone off on people who weren't replying to me and seen others do the same. I wonder if there's a specific reason other than the bile that would spew forth from the usual suspects toward any changes here?

And again - just wondering and making friendly conversation. :)

My wild stab-in-the-dark guess would be that he has more important things to do with his time than mess around fundamentally rewriting how func_messageboard works :}

yeah its more so about website development (or whatever the cools kids call it) being a time sink.

I dont think youre wrong in asking this really. Its just something that none of us have the perfect mixture of experience + freetime to make any worthwhile changes.

I'd take this over vBulletin or phpBB any day. Simple and it works, no dumb crap.

Replies wouldn't be an issue if people kept using post number or @ references in their titles, but i'll admit I even struggle to be consistent with that sometimes... making a way to do it automatically would be nice I guess. I don't think nested replies are needed though.

I love how streamlined and fast it is so agreed.

The board is how it is primarily because it was a clone of Qmap, which came before. I basically took Qmap's design, removed any feature I thought wasn't essential (e.g. columns) and cleaned up the visual layout. So it's basically a simplified/minimalistic version of Qmap.

As for why we don't have features like nested replies to posts, that is the same answer (qmap didn't), but to be honest I am always thinking about ways the board could evolve to be better and more usable and more approachable to newcomers (and veterans.) Those ideas are simmering very slowly and will take a long time to see the light of day, because I don't have a lot of time, and also because there's no urgency to make the changes because the site already works.

For example I finally changed it so spam posts are invisible to non-moderators, this was on my to-do list for about 4 years probably, and I only finally did it because there was a mass of spam that all appeared on the same day, and it happened to be a day when I was at home :)

Thanks metlslime for all that you do and for the explanation. We wouldn't have this community without you so thanks! Looking forward to whatever goodies come along when you have time.
I Like The Board
lack of nesting kinda keeps the conversations more inclusive I think.
Yeah Same Here
I feel like threaded forums encourage people to post replies that just nitpick parent comments, since the software is helping keep the nitpicking neatly organized in a tree.. whereas linear encourages you to carry the discussion forward, because everyone following the thread is going to see your post.

Nested replies can be really messy if implemented poorly. Most people tag the user or the post number if replying on a super busy thread.

Honestly the only feature that I would really like is an integrated search function.

That would be the shit.

Otherwise it's really func_tional.
Only Improvement For Me
Would be edit and delete

Editing and deleting is dangerous stuff. One of the best things about the site is that nothing ever disappears from it. People come and go but what they talked about and knowledge they shared still exists today, and that's really neat.

Deleting: nope
Editing: yes, but only for the first hour after posting, so you can fix broken links etc.

+1

Deleting: nope
Editing: nope

HTH.

If this hypothetical edit function is to be used for legit purposes, (fixing typos, bad links) and not just for shitposting reasons, then the edit window should be small - 1 hour seems too generous.

Thing is, I don't really see the point of this when you can just use the already existing "post preview" feature. If posts are still full of errors after you've previewed it, you're just sloppy and deserve to have your stupidly written in stone for all eternity.

Moderators can edit posts. Why not just let them do it if it realy has to be done?
No We Can't.
Only the initial topic posts.

+1 for editing within a short time frame. Nuff double posts and broken HTML etc.

Time limited edit should be available, but no deleting.

The preview works if you remember to use it. If there was an option to post only after at least one mandatory preview, I would use it.
Woohoo
white lines are gone

Lifes too short to use preview!

Also theres legit reasons to have an edit and delete. I'd use it to delete my own weird spam (like triple posts) and edit out typos.

This whole "etched in stone" business is just daft.

~30 minute window to edit posts sounds fair to me.

Easier to make some sort of client-side throttle that blocks accidental posts.
